On the one hand, there is the classic school of using a consultancy firm, and on the other hand, there is a start-up solution like Greenly. In this overview of these two solutions, we have realized that both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of consultancies is that they are focused on support, offering a very detailed analysis, but they are also more expensive and time consuming<br>. &nbsp;A start-up, however, will stand out for its speed. What interested us for this first assessment was to have a fairly quick overview of our impact, so that we could start acting quickly.</p><p>‍</p><h2>Update on PayFit's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>Our first assessment gave us a quick overview of our emissions, which allowed us to distinguish PayFit's main emission items. We realised the importance of Scope 3, although it is not currently mandatory to assess it. However, at PayFit, it is the most important emission item. Since we offer SaaS, we also noticed that the second most important emissions item was Digital. We were surprised by the low percentage of emissions that travel occupied, even if this result is linked to the context of the year 2020, which has strongly contributed to reducing the use of transport. We will therefore pay attention to this in the years to come. Finally, our third emissions item concerned fixed assets. I am quite convinced that it is not just me, as the CSR manager, who can implement reduction actions on my own. You have to involve all the stakeholders in the company. The objective is to reconcile the response to climate and environmental issues with the growth of our company. Using Platform.sh’ 2020 data, Greenly performed a density study to see how efficiently Platform.sh uses CPUs in the cloud compared to a standard deployment (AWS Elastic Cloud 2).

Platform.sh density was on average 12x more dense for their offering with the highest mutualization possible (grid) – -this means 12x less electricity was used to run an equivalent workload. More specifically, the breakdown was:

And 5x more dense for clients that requested low mutualization of resources (dedicated). 

This reduction in resource use, means less electricity is used by the datacenter, and ultimately lower CO2 emissions. On average for the globe, this translated into a 9x lower CO2 emission factor compared to the “bare mental scenario” due to Platform.sh superior density offer for their highly mutualized approach and 6x lower emissions for the less mutualized approach.

My role is really two-fold. First it is to communicate and convey to our investors how our portfolio is performing in areas of environmental or social governance. In addition of partnering with our portfolio companies directly, we help them understand and measure the impact that they are having on our planet. In the case of Stack Infrastructure, that is predominately related to power, water, and waste. 

Why did you decide to start measuring and reducing your company's carbon footprint?

In the world of digital infrastructure, energy and asset intensive businesses is typically where we operate. Therefore, we have a distinct obligation to really understand and be able to report back to many of the tenants that operate our datacenters. In order for us to be able to convey to some of the largest hyper scalers around the world what their proportion of carbon emissions are in a given facility, we need the underlined data in order to measure that. What got us started in our journey was really recognizing that we can't set reduction goals, we can't communicate to our tenants unless we really understand and have the data to do that ! 

Prior to joining IPI, I came from a more Venture Capital background and worked in impact investing. Before that, I worked at S&P Global and was engaged in a lot of product management. At my old venture firm, I was responsible for evaluating some of the qualities of the different ESG data analytics platforms that had come onto the market. I was therefore first introduced to Greenly through that screen, that was almost five years ago ! As I found myself in a leadership role at a different private equity firm, focused in digital infrastructure, I went back to the firms that I had initially evaluated. I found that Greenly's product had truly grown into a full scope carbon accounting solution that was going to be helpful for not only IPI but also Stack Infrastructure, our portfolio, and ultimately our hyperscale customers. 

What got you personally interested in fighting climate change?

I was an undergrad and spent a semester focused on micro financing clean water projects in the Dominican Republic. I came face-to-face with a failed natural resources system. When I returned to my university, I decided that I wanted to pursue a carrier in the science of sustainability and try to couple that with my business marketing background in a way to fight climate change. After having that entrance of being passionate about clean water solution, that has transitioned into a focus around energy and clean power procurement within the digital infrastructure industry.

What does your Carbon Footprint reveal 📊

Talking Medicine’s carbon footprint takes into account direct and energy emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also indirect emissions caused by service providers and services used by the company (Scope 3) which were the dominant contributor. Adding up all emissions, Talking Medicines had a carbon footprint of only 55t CO2e in 2021. This places Talking Medicines in the top 5 percentile in terms of low impact of all Greenly companies.

For any issue in a company, the first and most important step is to measure and define it... which we did with our carbon footprint! We also saw that it is an important element for the B Corp certification, as they value the fact that companies perform carbon footprint assessments, because it means that they measure their actions.</p><h2>ITV - Horizon Software's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>First, I learned what a scope 1, scope 2, scope 3 meant, with a better understanding of the sources of emissions by type and category. I also learned that we could successfully break down what the CO2 equivalent was through invoices. The rate of participation of our employees in the questionnaire, about 40%, revealed a still low level of maturity on environmental issues, and we have a lot of work to do to raise awareness and get people involved internally. We need a return on investment, not small useless gestures but effective actions to reduce our carbon footprint. We also want to go further in our eco-design practices with low code, we seek to maintain and improve our Green IT processes. It is important for us to be an influencer on this subject, with also the promotion of our Low Carbon Managed Services offer for the hosting of our solution but also in the development of the software (renouncing the ultra-latency race of our sector of activity to limit the impact on the environment of this type of energy consuming trading). Crewdle is a technology company that aims to build technology products that are more responsible both in terms of society and the environment. Our first product is a video conferencing platform that uses peer-to-peer technologies instead of media servers which results in a reduction of energy consumption, water usage and, ultimately, carbon emissions. By using their platform, our users are able to reduce their environmental footprint while communicating with their colleagues, partners or customers.


A good share of the large technology companies have already made commitments to reduce their environmental footprint and to become carbon neutral at some point in the future. However, we haven’t seen a lot of companies rethinking the way they build technology products to be more environmentally responsible. We’re hoping other companies will, like Crewdle, use their creativity to build products and platforms that will consume less energy, reducing their carbon footprint.

ITV - Why did you carry out a GHG assessment? 🤔

Carrying out a carbon assessment of our company was the first logical step in reducing our carbon footprint. Having a precise number when it comes to carbon emissions has helped us have a better understanding of the actions we can take to further reduce the carbon emissions made by our vendors and by our employees.

Greenly has a great product for doing a carbon assessment. We loved the fact that it connects directly with our cloud accounting platform and extracts all our expenses that we can then easily categorize. As for measuring the impact of our employees, it was quick and simple to send the survey to them and they felt the same when it came to answering it. 

Some of the actionable ways Crewdle plans to reduce their emissions 🌎

Implementing a responsible purchasing policy by engaging only with suppliers committed to environmental reporting - Reducing the impact of this activity mainly involves setting up eco-conditions in the service purchasing policy for future Partners. This includes requiring that they publish an emissions balance sheet, an emissions reduction action plan, aquire certifications, etc... This also involves evaluating the environmental commitments of frequent partners (BEGES, emissions reduction action plan, certification, etc.), by encouraging them to make a greater commitment.

Improve ad targeting to reduce the number and size of your campaigns - for each type of media, adopt a "clean and precise approach". Target the option with the highest conversion rate and the best performance with the least amount of ad volume. This way, you can continue to reach your objectives while reducing the emissions related to customer acquisition.

Limiting the use and distribution of videos - The use of video requires the hosting and transfer of large amounts of data.

Choosing reconditioned equipment when renewing furniture and IT equipment - instead of buying new, buy used! It's a simple yet effective was to implement sustainable purchasing within the company.

Equativ is an independent advertising technology company that provides the tools, platforms and support to connect publishers and marketers in a digital and programmatic advertising ecosystem. With the desire to act against climate change, Equativ called on Greenly to analyze and reduce its carbon footprint. Thanks to this collaboration, Equativ obtained its first "GHG assessment" badge, a first step in its Net Zero trajectory.

This is a constructive first step for us. If we want to be part of a sustainable advertising ecosystem, we need to properly understand, measure and act. We have implemented a solution to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of our digital advertising campaigns. This is an essential first step towards a responsible ecosystem.

As the conversation around CSR continues to grow and our industry in particular begins to pay more attention to environmental impact, we wanted to invest in responsible change. As part of our Planet Tech'care commitment, we are working with Greenly to measure the carbon impact of the infrastructures hosted in our data centres and by our cloud partners (AWS, Azure, GCP, scaleway, etc.). The solution deployed allows us to offer each client managed by Alter Way a measurement of the carbon footprint of their infrastructure. This is unprecedented on the market.

<h2>Background & Objectives 🔍</h2><p>Since 2006, Alter Way has been a committed company with recognised expertise. Alter Way assists companies in building a high-performance and responsible digital environment in order to meet future challenges by integrating economic, societal and environmental dimensions.</p><p>Since 1 January 2022, Alter Way has been spearheading the Cloud Infrastructure offering of the Smile group, the leading Open Source digital services company in Europe. This project with the Smile group is unique, ambitious and creates value for the market.</p><p>We design, develop and manage cloud and DevOps oriented architectures with a focus on innovation, performance and accountability.</p><p>In 2022, Alter Way has developed a GreenOps offer to support its clients in their environmental trajectory.</p><div class="container_img"><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/6232f79b68d15d3d9b69c096/633304c0c3d0a27874e29334_A2.jpg" loading="lazy" /></div><h2>GreenOps, an offer and a commitment</h2><p>With more than 7 years of expertise in the Cloud, the Alter Way teams have asked themselves about the environmental impact of the Cloud infrastructures set up at their clients' sites. In order to be able to provide answers, but also to industrialise the approach, we decided to set up and define the GreenOps method, in line with best practice methodological frameworks such as DevOps, SecOps and FinOps. We must no longer just ask ourselves the question of the least expensive cloud infrastructure to meet the need, we must also define high-performance and sustainable architectures that have the least impact on the environment. </p><p><strong>Alter Way has been deploying and managing often complex platforms on various public clouds for many years. To do this, alter way uses agile methodologies (DevOps, SecOps, GitOps, Finops) to build and manage these infrastructures efficiently. </strong></p><p>Alter Way is also committed to limiting the carbon emissions of cloud infrastructures by implementing a "GreenOps" approach that "oversees" all OPS projects and methods. This "GreenOps" offer is reflected in the implementation of various elements: The creation of a new engineer profile in the company (GreenOps Architect), a reference framework that makes it possible to list all the best practices to be applied in a project, standard architectures defined in "Infrastructure as Code", a set of tools that make it possible to measure and monitor the evolution of carbon emissions even before the deployment of changes (CI/CD). </p><p>At Alter Way, GreenOps is both a method of optimising the ecological impact of its infrastructure resources and a new dimension to the company culture based on DevOps and FinOps.</p><h2>Our CSR policy 🌱</h2><p>Without digital technology, the world cannot function; it has become an essential tool in our lives. These emissions come mainly from energy consumption and in particular from electricity consumption. Our immediate next steps are to establish a carbon reduction plan with specific targets, with the aim of reaching Net Zero by 2035.
