What can you tell us about your company? 🔍 

Forest is London's most sustainable and affordable shared e-bike service.  Our mission is clear – shift commuters away from more intensive carbon-emitting transport modes to create a cleaner, more sustainable city. 

We operate a shared e-bike service that makes cycling more affordable and sustainable. Users enjoy 10 minutes of free cycling daily by engaging with ads within the app. Notably, our operations are fully electric, powered by renewable energy, and hold a B Corp certification.

Sustainability is at the heart of Forest's mission. As we scale it is crucial we have carbon reporting partners who can provide us the level of support we need to keep us on track for sustainable, responsible and considerate growth

Why did you decide to carry out a GHG assessment? 🤔

Previous to Greenly, we initially relied on open-source data for our carbon calculations. However, as we scaled, we looked to externalize our carbon footprint and sought Greenly's expertise. Having our carbon footprint report conducted by a third party ensured that we were keeping in line with greenhouse gas protocol and not over-inflating or under-inflating carbon emissions calculations.   Indeed, this level of GHG assessment reassures us that we are measuring our CO2 figures as accurately as possible whilst also following best practice for reducing emissions in our supply chain and other Scope 3 areas.

We want to ensure that as we grow we are able to retain our position as the most sustainable shared e-bike service.

Having reviewed a number of tools, Greenly seemed to have the most solid methodology and approach for measuring Scope 3, where the lion's share of our emissions originate. We really liked the interface and the support of the account managers at Greenly at every step of the process.

Ultimately, it was a combination of three things: Greenly’s experience in our sector, its reasonable pricing and their intuitive platform that aligns with our lean team.

Greenly's platform provided us with a comprehensive and straightforward data collection process. This was a significant shift from open-source data, since we weren’t able to scrutinize every single purchase we ever made. We also liked the way the results are graphically laid out. You can start to get a real feel for where your emissions are coming from and directly know the next steps for reducing our carbon footprint.

What were the outcomes of the Carbon Footprint report? 📊

Our carbon assessment showed that our total emissions in 2022 were 2260 tCO2e. Our main emission posts were Assets (71.6%), Services Purchase (13%) and Freight (4.9%). 

A fascinating finding was the impact air freight has on our total figure.  Although only a small portion of our hardware was sent by air freight last year, the impact that this had on our CO2 emissions was significant! This certainly highlighted the importance of sea freight over air freight. 

The rest of the report wasn’t so surprising, given that our business operations grew hugely in the last year. When we looked at the categorization, the hardware as a proportion went from 90 percent of our emissions to about 70. But that was the only real sway. A lot of other areas, for example, like office technology, for example, or commuting, stayed pretty much the same as a proportion of the overall figure. 

The main one action plan recommended by Greenly, and that we have already started implementing it, was buying secondhand but unused assets. This doesn't reduce our total emissions, but it allows us to have avoided emissions. 

The second reduction item that is coming this year is our work with our suppliers. Our relationship with Greenly is going to facilitate making that process a lot easier and getting our suppliers to reduce their emissions as well.

The last one goes back to air freight and avoiding it as much as possible.

For the emissions we cannot reduce, we are investing in a project with The Great Reserve, who protect giant sequoia trees which are now becoming endangered in North America. The project plants groves in the UK, on land that has already been felled. This UK-based initiative emphasizes long-term care for trees, adding a tangible dimension to our offsetting efforts.

How was the Carbon Footprint perceived by your team?

The Forest team received the carbon footprint report positively. The survey sparked interest in food consumption's impact on emissions, reflecting our commitment to understanding and improving our environmental footprint. I think it is important that we set a positive example as a company. 

What would you say to a company that's hesitant to embark on their first carbon footprint? 

We would advise companies who are hesitant about embarking on their first carbon footprint assessment that incremental improvements are key, and perfection should not be the goal. Procrastination only delays the journey towards sustainability, and taking the first step allows for continuous adaptation and gradual improvements over time.

Technology is the heart of our business. We use our technology to fully digitise how you book and manage road haulage eliminating costly and time consuming tasks. We eliminate the costs involved in procuring subcontract transport, onboarding & managing hauliers, booking & tracking loads, dealing with issues, chasing paperwork and paying invoices. Our scale and market intelligence ensures that you will never overpay for a load. We will typically deliver a direct saving on your existing spend of between 10-20%.

We are also passionate about sustainability. It is estimated that approximately 25% of trucks are running empty on our roads at any one time. Our mission is to fill those empty trucks using our technology and data to match loads across multiple vendors and hauliers. We work with hundreds of fully vetted and quality hauliers across the UK offering you easy and flexible access to road transport when you need it.

We have been working with some large retailers and achieved up to a 15% reduction in their empty running. This delivers huge carbon benefits, much more than can be achieved with alternative fuels

Sustainability is one of the 4 key pillars that we have built our business on and so we want to lead by example. We have always strived to implement sustainable processes and practices where possible but never had a real idea of our green gas emissions or had a clear view of where exactly we should look to make improvements.

The platform is very easy to use and is clear and concise. The visuals are good and the access to various bits if material i.e. communication templates, case studies and training has been great. We have had amazing support from various members of the team; they have had a lot of patience with us and provided the guidance we needed whilst we were trying to scope out our carbon reporting requirements.

Our results showed that we emitted 495.5 tCO2e in 2022. The main areas we need to focus on are travel and commute which we have tried to impact by implementing an electric car scheme for our employees. Another area that we have to focus on is supplier engagement so that we can ensure we are implementing a responsible purchasing policy. The benefits of implementing the reduction action required are it will reinforce that we are committed to being a leader in sustainability within our industry and will also help demonstrate this to our customer, the majority of which see this as a priority when it comes to who they do business with.

The Backstory Behind Why 48forty Chose Greenly

We sat down with Jessica, the ESG Director at 48forty for a few questions to find out how they came across Greenly and why calculating their carbon footprint is important to them.

Why did you decide to start measuring and reducing your company's carbon footprint?

First off, it was just recognizing that there's a real need to be very transparent about the way we think about our environmental impacts as a company. More and more, the public and investors are asking for companies to be very transparent about this information. So much so that I think it's becoming a license to operate. I'd say in the U.S, we may be a little bit slower to start this journey, but most certainly globally it's becoming a demand and a part of everyone's day-to-day business needs. So for us, it was about taking that first step ahead of the curve and being more proactive than reactive, and giving real transparency to our community.

For two big reasons. First, because Greenly was founded and started in the EU, specifically in France. Having the opportunity to work with a company that's been having to deal with managing carbon data or managing climate data in a highly regulated jurisdiction was important for us. Regulations like that are relatively new in the U.S. and we realize that reporting this type of information can be very impactful when you get into that regulated space. So we wanted to work with a partner that had that experience and understood what it takes to be successful. 

Second, I think the Greenly platform is amazing. The fact that it really digs into infographics and showcases carbon accounting in a way that's very directly relatable and simple rather than overcomplicating things, is incredible. Carbon accounting is really important in our industry and so being able to take it back to just working on reducing our carbon footprint in an effective and efficient way really simplifies the process. 

What got you personally interested in fighting climate change?

I am a sustainability practitioner by career. I started off as a fisheries biologist actually, and so I'm just a naturalist as a whole. Additionally, when you see different communities being impacted by climate change and especially by major catastrophic storm events, we need to be thinking about the way we source energy, how we run our homes, and our day-to-day lives in general . Climate change really actually impacts all of us and everything that we do on a day to day basis. So where we have the opportunity to be a part of the solution, even if it's a small piece, I definitely want to dig in and do that. 

So in terms of your industry, where do you see the trend going in sustainability and climate change? Do you see it growing? And how do you feel it's really going to evolve in this space?

In our industry specifically, optimizing logistics is key. We do a number of what's called reverse logistics activities which is us managing different elements of our customer's packaging in the supply chain and making those packaging materials reusable for a longer lifespan. So when you think about that, there's not only the product that we manage, which is pallets, but then there's also the transport, getting things to and from. Reducing the carbon emissions of all of these steps is essential for us and the industry. 

Honestly however, I think there's a broader piece to all of this, and that is fighting climate change. It really, really is impactful to our communities in addition to the global scale of things. There are coastal communities that are getting hammered year after year by major storm events. There are inland communities that are being completely flooded out in ways that they never thought possible. So there is a local tie-in that I think becomes important as a human element that links back into the overall way of thinking about major trends and in the climate space.
