We are dedicated to reducing the effects of our activity on the environment and through our greener hosting MODE strategy, we’re making that a reality. Methodological update for cloud emissions *

Since 2020, Platform.sh has been calculating its direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2025, Platform.sh collaborated with Greenly to develop a new methodological approach, enhancing the way it calculates cloud emissions for its customers. As a multicloud platform, Platform.sh aimed to create a reporting system that is agnostic to Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and based on location-specific carbon intensity data, addressing the inconsistencies in CSP reporting. Although carbon footprinting is an evolving process, our teams are dedicated to improving the accuracy of these calculations. The emissions data for 2024 and 2023 have been updated accordingly, and any significant updates will be communicated to customers who request this information.

This methodology is based on the continuous work of Greenly, One byte model, Cloudcarbonfootprint and Boavitza.

We decided to carry out a GHG assessment because we recognize the significant role enterprises play in global carbon emissions. Corapak is proud to take this crucial step in our climate journey. Our current B Corp certification allows us to join companies that wish to integrate social and environmental objectives into their business model and operations. We are audited every year in our ESG approach and wish to go further, in particular by obtaining B Corp certification, which allows us to implement a set of good practices adapted to our sector of activity and which requires us to commit ourselves with our employees, suppliers, and customers in particular.</p><h2><strong>Why Greenly? 🌱</strong><br></h2><p>We already had a few projects on recycling, building insulation, bicycle bonuses, etc., but we wanted to go further, and in a pragmatic way, with the CO2 equivalent indicator. For any issue in a company, the first and most important step is to measure and define it... which we did with our carbon footprint! We also saw that it is an important element for the B Corp certification, as they value the fact that companies perform carbon footprint assessments, because it means that they measure their actions.</p><h2>ITV - Horizon Software's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>First, I learned what a scope 1, scope 2, scope 3 meant, with a better understanding of the sources of emissions by type and category. I also learned that we could successfully break down what the CO2 equivalent was through invoices. The rate of participation of our employees in the questionnaire, about 40%, revealed a still low level of maturity on environmental issues, and we have a lot of work to do to raise awareness and get people involved internally. We need a return on investment, not small useless gestures but effective actions to reduce our carbon footprint. We also want to go further in our eco-design practices with low code, we seek to maintain and improve our Green IT processes. It is important for us to be an influencer on this subject, with also the promotion of our Low Carbon Managed Services offer for the hosting of our solution but also in the development of the software (renouncing the ultra-latency race of our sector of activity to limit the impact on the environment of this type of energy consuming trading). In terms of purchasing, we have set up a scoring system with a questionnaire integrating environmental criteria to better choose our suppliers.</p><div class="container_img"><img src="" loading="lazy" /></div><h2></h2>

We decided to carry out a greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment as part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainability. By understanding our emissions footprint, we can identify areas where we can reduce our environmental impact and make more informed decisions to mitigate climate change. Before calculating our emissions with Greenly, we had very little idea of our environmental footprint based on our operations, energy usage, and other factors. However, using Greenly not only provided us with a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of our GHG emissions across different scopes and activities but helped us implement various initiatives aimed at minimizing our environmental impact and contributing positively to society. These initiatives included waste reduction programs, energy efficiency measures, community engagement projects, and supporting sustainable practices throughout our supply chain.

We chose Greenly for several reasons that align with our values and needs. Firstly, Greenly's origins and expertise in the Environmental space, aligned with the Paris Agreement, were appealing to us. Being aligned as closely as possible with the Paris agreement was a must for Merge. 

Additionally, we were attracted to Greenly's approach and tools for carbon data management. Your platform offered comprehensive carbon calculators and reporting tools that made it easy for us to track and analyze our emissions across different scopes and activities. The user-friendly interface and robust features paired with our dedicated support (shoutout to Victoria Reypin) allowed us to generate accurate reports and insights and efficiently communicate our journey. 

Overall, Greenly's tools simplified the process of GHG assessment and management for us, enabling us to focus on implementing strategies to minimize our environmental impact effectively.

Our carbon assessment revealed that our company emits 170.6 tCO2e per year across various scopes of our operations. This comprehensive analysis allowed us to identify key areas where emissions occur and prioritize action items to reduce our carbon footprint. 

One significant action item recommended by Greenly is to focus on energy efficiency measures within our traveling policies and criteria. This includes reevaluating and creating policies on traveling within the company. 

By reducing travel and streamlining through more virtual meets, we can directly decrease our emissions and lower our environmental impact. 

One of the main lessons we have learned from this carbon assessment is the importance of data accuracy and transparency. Accurate data collection and analysis are essential for understanding our emissions profile and identifying effective mitigation strategies. Additionally, transparency in reporting our emissions allows us to hold ourselves accountable and communicate our environmental impact to stakeholders effectively. As a result of this assessment, we have implemented several changes to reduce our emissions and improve our overall sustainability performance.

We do everything we can to have a positive impact on the world we live in, that's our ambition. And that's PayFit's mission: to make PayFiters proud of what we do for society, to preserve the environment, and also to promote diversity and inclusion. Regarding the environment, more specifically, we are all aware that it is not a question of choice or beliefs, but that it is really the biggest challenge of our time, and that obviously the first step is to understand our own environmental impact, to better assess and improve it.</p><p><strong>Why Greenly?</strong></p><p>When we decided to do our carbon assessment, we realized that there are two schools of thought today. On the one hand, there is the classic school of using a consultancy firm, and on the other hand, there is a start-up solution like Greenly. In this overview of these two solutions, we have realized that both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of consultancies is that they are focused on support, offering a very detailed analysis, but they are also more expensive and time consuming<br>. &nbsp;A start-up, however, will stand out for its speed. What interested us for this first assessment was to have a fairly quick overview of our impact, so that we could start acting quickly.</p><p>‍</p><h2>Update on PayFit's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>Our first assessment gave us a quick overview of our emissions, which allowed us to distinguish PayFit's main emission items. We realised the importance of Scope 3, although it is not currently mandatory to assess it. However, at PayFit, it is the most important emission item. Since we offer SaaS, we also noticed that the second most important emissions item was Digital. We were surprised by the low percentage of emissions that travel occupied, even if this result is linked to the context of the year 2020, which has strongly contributed to reducing the use of transport. We will therefore pay attention to this in the years to come. Finally, our third emissions item concerned fixed assets. I am quite convinced that it is not just me, as the CSR manager, who can implement reduction actions on my own. You have to involve all the stakeholders in the company. The objective is to reconcile the response to climate and environmental issues with the growth of our company. To do this, we must already have a better understanding of our uses, such as in terms of actions for the use of our servers and our online advertising, but also in terms of thinking about how to have a more responsible purchasing policy</p><div class="container_img"><img src="" loading="lazy" /></div><h2></h2>

This assessment, which we have now completed for the second year in a row, helps us track our progress toward achieving net-zero emissions and strengthens our commitment to sustainability across all aspects of our business—from product design to logistics. The GHG assessment also allows us to engage with our suppliers and employees, creating a shared responsibility in our journey toward a greener future.

Did you already have an idea of your greenhouse gas emissions before calculating them with Greenly?

Before partnering with Greenly, we had an initial understanding of the importance of measuring our greenhouse gas emissions, but the detailed, comprehensive analysis provided by Greenly in both 2022 and 2023 allowed us to track our emissions with precision. This ongoing process has given us a clearer picture of our actual emissions across various scopes, allowing us to develop and refine our decarbonization strategy over time.

Had you implemented any CSR actions in your company before measuring your emissions?

Yes, SFA Group had already implemented several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions, such as eco-designing products, adopting sustainable procurement policies, and transitioning to low-carbon transportation options. The GHG assessment, however, has provided us with valuable data that supports continuous improvements and helps us better understand where our efforts are making the most impact.

At SFA Group, we chose Greenly because of their expertise in carbon accounting and their proven track record in helping companies like ours take measurable steps toward reducing our carbon footprint. Greenly's user-friendly and state-of-the-art platform allowed us to easily measure and track our emissions while aligning our efforts with international sustainability standards. We were particularly drawn to Greenly’s approach because it allowed us to track and measure emissions for our entire global group, which spans different regions and languages. The ability to break down the data and track emissions across various teams was crucial for us, especially given our diverse operations. As we worked with Greenly, we saw the platform evolve and adapt to our needs, making it more efficient and tailored to our global structure over time.

At the beginning, we faced some challenges, particularly with managing access across different teams and dealing with bugs in the solution, especially within the employee survey feature. However, Greenly’s team was very responsive and supportive. They worked closely with us to troubleshoot and improve the platform together. This collaboration allowed us to progressively refine the process, and we saw the platform evolve with new features that made our reporting and data management easier.

How did you find using Greenly's tools: SaaS, carbon calculators?

Initially, using the platform was a bit challenging due to the complexity of managing data for our entire group. Different teams needed separate access, and language barriers were an issue. However, as we continued to use the SaaS platform, we saw its capabilities grow and improve. Greenly's platform has become more intuitive, and the tools—like the carbon calculators—are now much more efficient, allowing us to better track and manage our emissions. With each iteration, it has become easier to use, and we appreciate how Greenly continues to refine the platform to meet our needs.

Our carbon assessment revealed that the majority of our emissions stem from Scope 3, particularly from activities such as purchased goods, freight, and waste management. To address these challenges, we have implemented several key initiatives:

Sustainable Procurement: We are enhancing our procurement policies by partnering with suppliers committed to environmental transparency and emissions reduction.​

Wind-Powered Transportation: In collaboration with innovative maritime companies specializing in wind-assisted cargo ships, we have signed contracts to utilize their services starting in 2027. Maison Denis' dedication to combatting climate change is evident through its internal efforts in calculating and mitigating Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, recognizing the importance of addressing Scope 3 emissions, which often constitute a significant portion of overall emissions, the group sought assistance from Greenly for a comprehensive carbon assessment. Despite no regulatory obligation, Maison Denis voluntarily engaged with Greenly to gain insights into its carbon footprint, emphasizing a proactive approach towards sustainability.

The decision to select Greenly was taken following a thorough evaluation process of several service providers offering similar solutions. We conducted then a satisfactory pilot project with one of our companies based in Singapore. It convinced us to deploy the greenhouse gas assessment to 13 of our entities.

We were interested in the simplicity in apprehending and calculating Scope 3 emissions. Greenly's solution lies in its ability to harness financial data to streamline the complex process of emissions calculation. This capability is designed to simplify calculation workflows.

During the course of our collaboration, Greenly demonstrated availability and responsiveness. Regular meetings ensured that our project remained on track, fostering open communication and mutual understanding. Greenly understood our unique operational constraints, tailoring their approach to suit our specific needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy. This adaptability helps in ensuring a seamless experience. They also appear to be committed to continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and looking for ways to enhance the system.

While our expectations were generally aligned with the results provided by Greenly for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, delving into Scope 3 emissions opened a new level of insight and understanding. We approached the findings with a positive outlook, viewing them as validation of our ongoing efforts towards sustainability. It was gratifying to see that the products we offer inherently possess a low carbon footprint, reflecting our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. This reaffirmed our belief that we are moving in the right direction. 

We did not expect the relatively low impact of transportation on our overall emissions profile. Given our status as an international company with products distributed across various countries, we anticipated transportation to constitute a more significant portion of our carbon footprint. However, our reliance on long shelf-life products, such as canned and sterilized pouches transported mainly by sea freight, mitigated this impact. This realization underscored the importance of considering the entire product lifecycle in assessing emissions.

Another noteworthy observation was the significant contribution of packaging to our emissions profile. While not entirely unexpected, it served as a reminder of the need to continually improve our packaging practices. We are actively engaged in efforts to reduce packaging weight, enhance recyclability, and incorporate more recycled materials while keeping as the utmost priority the highest standard of food preservation and safety.

As we now have a comprehensive view of our emissions across all scopes, our focus is on developing a robust long-term roadmap to achieve our sustainability objectives.  While acknowledging the nuances surrounding terminologies such as “carbon neutrality” and “net-zero”, we are committed to making tangible progress in reducing our emissions. Our goal, aligned with the principles of net-zero emissions, is to achieve net zero by 2040. We are proud of the transparency we maintain regarding our emissions profile and are eager to share our progress with stakeholders through various channels, including our ESG reports.

In addressing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, our primary focus lies in optimizing energy consumption, particularly in electricity and fuel usage. We have dedicated resources to actively explore energy-saving measures, including potential upgrades to our factory’s machinery. Also, our internal communication efforts extend to engaging employees in our sustainability journey through initiatives such as EHS weeks and Climate Fresk. Regarding Scope 3 emissions, our strategy centers on engaging with our suppliers to drive collective action towards emissions reduction. While recognizing the challenges posed by our diverse supplier base, we are committed to fostering collaboration and encouraging adherence to sustainability standards. We are confident that legal, economic and technical contexts should soon evolve faster.

I am Elle Parker, the Global Sustainability Strategy Lead at Tenth Revolution Group. In this role, I oversee the sustainability strategy and carbon reduction initiatives for our entire group, including Frank Recruitment Group, Revolent, and Rebura.

Our commitment to sustainability has been evident through our internal reporting of Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2018. However, we recognized the need to comprehensively address Scope 3 emissions—a substantial component of our carbon footprint. In 2022, we partnered with Greenly to gain a holistic understanding of our emissions. This decision was partly influenced by industry leaders such as Microsoft and Salesforce, who emphasize the importance of working with eco-conscious partners, making it essential for us to be well-prepared for inquiries regarding our environmental efforts. 

Regarding regulations, is this something that you also are trying to anticipate?

In line with our proactive approach, we are preparing for forthcoming regulations that will impact our business operations. Voluntary reporting is an essential step for us, ensuring we align ourselves with emerging environmental standards.

Choosing to work with Greenly for our carbon assessment was a well-informed decision. Our interactions with Greenly's Account Executive, Theo, and Account Manager, Martin, were highly productive, and we had full confidence in their abilities to support our goals. Their expertise, coupled with the user-friendly platform, made Greenly a fitting choice. Plus, Greenly's focus on the technology sector meant there was a strong affinity with our industry, further solidifying our choice. 

What are the main lessons you have learned from this carbon assessment?

Our carbon assessment with Greenly helped us to identify the prominence of Scope 3 emissions across our organization, with business travel being a notable contributor. While this insight wasn't entirely unexpected, the extent of Scope 3 emissions (constituting approximately 94%) was eye-opening. The assessment also highlighted our digital footprint, pointing to areas that warrant further exploration and mitigation. 

Short-, Medium-, and Long-term Outlook: Our objective is to leverage the action plans recommended by Greenly to reduce emissions, in collaboration with their climate expert, Quentin, as we work on a Science-Based-Target reduction plan. These actions will pave the way for a more sustainable future for our business.

Impact Within and Outside the Company: Externally, we've observed an increased emphasis on sustainability in customer bids and tenders. The questions posed by customers, particularly regarding our sustainability efforts, have grown in frequency and significance. Furthermore, our investors, as private equity stakeholders, now request annual ESG reports. Internally, our employees are telling us that sustainability is important to them, with 70%  saying it is important to them that we are a socially and environmentally sustainable business in our latest employee survey. This growing emphasis on sustainability among customers, vendors, investors, and our employees underscores its rising importance.

What would you say to a hesitant company?

To companies hesitant about embarking on a carbon footprint analysis, I urge you to initiate the process. Starting may seem daunting, but it provides a holistic view of your carbon footprint, pinpointing key areas for improvement. Utilizing available data enables you to identify hotspots and areas for improvement and take meaningful action promptly. Sustainability is of paramount importance, and small steps taken sooner rather than later can lead to substantial positive outcomes.

Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) functions as an independent charity overseeing and assisting visitor attractions, museums, art galleries, and arts centers throughout the county of Hampshire in the UK. The trust organizes a diverse array of workshops, classes, events, and exhibitions. It annually welcomes more than 15,000 children through its immersive education program, engages in projects with individuals, groups, and communities lacking access to culture, and manages 2.5 million objects associated with Hampshire's rich history. With a staff of approximately 140 and over 400 volunteers, HCT has been actively working to understand and mitigate its environmental impact since 2019.

In the pursuit of environmental improvement, HCT has developed comprehensive action plans for the upcoming 12 months. A specialized project team comprising 12-14 individuals from various parts of the organization dedicates half a day per week to HCT's environmental initiatives. Notably, with the assistance of a HEIF grant from the University of Sussex, Josephine Lethbridge and Jo Lindsay Walton, supported by other DHCC members, collaborated with HCT in 2023. Their focus was to explore HCT's approach to decarbonization and provide support, including the involvement of the carbon accounting platform Greenly as a project partner.

Greenly positioned itself as a tech solution to the complex tasks of carbon accounting and the creation of carbon management plans. Greenly provided us with an accessible package for annual greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting, climate expert support, and automated carbon reduction suggestions!

They employed a hybrid approach, combining spend-based and activity-based assessments to calculate carbon footprints and the platform offered a flexible mix, emphasizing that carbon accounting should support actionable decarbonization strategies. 

What were the outcomes of the Carbon Footprint report? 📊

The collaboration with HCT yielded detailed emissions data, offering a level of granularity that really impressed our team. The insights aligned with HCT's expectations, revealing areas for focus and highlighting unexpected emissions sources. The main benefit of Greenly's analysis was its potential to lend clarity and gravitas to HCT's existing plans, aiding in funding applications, stakeholder engagement, and internal decision-making.

Our team expressed immense enthusiasm for the detailed emissions data and the diverse charts and perspectives available. A team member conveyed their excitement, stating, "We're all a bit overwhelmed by how fantastic it is... It probably would have taken us a few years to reach this point."

In general, the distribution of emissions across various facets of HCT's operations, and the implications for key areas of focus, really aligned with our expectations. 

The primary advantage of the analysis was perceived in its potential to bring clarity and significance to the team's existing plans. One team member remarked, "We were really stuck. Some people want to see data, figures, and proof supporting proposed approaches and action plans. So Greenly has really assisted with that." 

Another added, "Just having the data is fantastic. There are numerous ways we can use it – in funding applications, advocating our case, pushing initiatives with the council, and internally as well, to get people on board."

This could involve increased encouragement from Greenly for senior staff participation, especially during the final presentation, and greater involvement of staff from various departments in data collection.

What were some challenges addressed? 🤔

We faced challenges in accessing expertise, prioritizing actions, and mobilizing resources for sustainability initiatives. Greenly's platform addressed these challenges by providing comprehensive emissions data, facilitating informed decision-making, and offering dedicated staff time for data compilation.

Greenly, acknowledge HCT as a slightly atypical client, embracing the opportunity to apply its tools and expertise in a new context. The collaboration exemplified Greenly's commitment to expanding its services to different types of clients, aligning with its goal of creating a highly automated platform.

At time of writing, we are working on refining our recommendations for project partners. We hope to continue to work with both HCT and Greenly, and have recently sought follow-on funding (AHRC IAA and AHRC Net Zero Design Accelerator) to support this work. On the Greenly side, we see potential for expanding resources to support clients in using data internally and externally, opportunities around quantifying and visualising uncertainty, as well as localising decarbonisation recommendation resources, and transforming approaches to carbon offsetting.
