We do everything we can to have a positive impact on the world we live in, that's our ambition. And that's PayFit's mission: to make PayFiters proud of what we do for society, to preserve the environment, and also to promote diversity and inclusion. Regarding the environment, more specifically, we are all aware that it is not a question of choice or beliefs, but that it is really the biggest challenge of our time, and that obviously the first step is to understand our own environmental impact, to better assess and improve it.</p><p><strong>Why Greenly?</strong></p><p>When we decided to do our carbon assessment, we realized that there are two schools of thought today. On the one hand, there is the classic school of using a consultancy firm, and on the other hand, there is a start-up solution like Greenly. In this overview of these two solutions, we have realized that both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of consultancies is that they are focused on support, offering a very detailed analysis, but they are also more expensive and time consuming<br>. &nbsp;A start-up, however, will stand out for its speed. What interested us for this first assessment was to have a fairly quick overview of our impact, so that we could start acting quickly.</p><p>‍</p><h2>Update on PayFit's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>Our first assessment gave us a quick overview of our emissions, which allowed us to distinguish PayFit's main emission items. We realised the importance of Scope 3, although it is not currently mandatory to assess it. However, at PayFit, it is the most important emission item. Since we offer SaaS, we also noticed that the second most important emissions item was Digital. We were surprised by the low percentage of emissions that travel occupied, even if this result is linked to the context of the year 2020, which has strongly contributed to reducing the use of transport. We will therefore pay attention to this in the years to come. Finally, our third emissions item concerned fixed assets. We also think that there is an interesting potential for reduction that we will be able to take advantage of.</p><p>‍</p><div class="container_img"><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/6232f79b68d15d3d9b69c096/6241b18e36f5c271fa437b4e_61faa93ecd32936be76d83bc_kazuend-19SC2oaVZW0-unsplash-1-(1).png" loading="lazy" /></div><h2>Payfit wants to reduce its emissions 📉</h2><p>Defining the action plan is underway. To achieve our objective, we intend to involve managers for each major emission item. We are therefore going to work together with the departments concerned to define the possible and impactful reduction actions, while respecting the 2021 development and growth objectives that have been defined. I am quite convinced that it is not just me, as the CSR manager, who can implement reduction actions on my own. You have to involve all the stakeholders in the company. The objective is to reconcile the response to climate and environmental issues with the growth of our company. To do this, we must already have a better understanding of our uses, such as in terms of actions for the use of our servers and our online advertising, but also in terms of thinking about how to have a more responsible purchasing policy</p><h2></h2>

Our current B Corp certification allows us to join companies that wish to integrate social and environmental objectives into their business model and operations. We are audited every year in our ESG approach and wish to go further, in particular by obtaining B Corp certification, which allows us to implement a set of good practices adapted to our sector of activity and which requires us to commit ourselves with our employees, suppliers, and customers in particular.</p><h2><strong>Why Greenly? 🌱</strong><br></h2><p>We already had a few projects on recycling, building insulation, bicycle bonuses, etc., but we wanted to go further, and in a pragmatic way, with the CO2 equivalent indicator. For any issue in a company, the first and most important step is to measure and define it... which we did with our carbon footprint! We also saw that it is an important element for the B Corp certification, as they value the fact that companies perform carbon footprint assessments, because it means that they measure their actions.</p><h2>ITV - Horizon Software's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>First, I learned what a scope 1, scope 2, scope 3 meant, with a better understanding of the sources of emissions by type and category. I also learned that we could successfully break down what the CO2 equivalent was through invoices. The rate of participation of our employees in the questionnaire, about 40%, revealed a still low level of maturity on environmental issues, and we have a lot of work to do to raise awareness and get people involved internally. We need a return on investment, not small useless gestures but effective actions to reduce our carbon footprint. We also want to go further in our eco-design practices with low code, we seek to maintain and improve our Green IT processes. It is important for us to be an influencer on this subject, with also the promotion of our Low Carbon Managed Services offer for the hosting of our solution but also in the development of the software (renouncing the ultra-latency race of our sector of activity to limit the impact on the environment of this type of energy consuming trading). In terms of purchasing, we have set up a scoring system with a questionnaire integrating environmental criteria to better choose our suppliers.</p><h2></h2>

Methodological update for cloud emissions *

Since 2020, Upsunhas been calculating its direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2025, Upsun collaborated with Greenly to develop a new methodological approach, enhancing the way it calculates cloud emissions for its customers. As a multicloud platform, Upsun aimed to create a reporting system that is agnostic to Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and based on location-specific carbon intensity data, addressing the inconsistencies in CSP reporting. Although carbon footprinting is an evolving process, our teams are dedicated to improving the accuracy of these calculations. The emissions data for 2024 and 2023 have been updated accordingly, and any significant updates will be communicated to customers who request this information.

This methodology is based on the continuous work of Greenly, One byte model, Cloudcarbonfootprint and Boavitza.

We decided to carry out a greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment as part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainability. However, using Greenly not only provided us with a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of our GHG emissions across different scopes and activities but helped us implement various initiatives aimed at minimizing our environmental impact and contributing positively to society. These initiatives included waste reduction programs, energy efficiency measures, community engagement projects, and supporting sustainable practices throughout our supply chain.

We chose Greenly for several reasons that align with our values and needs. Firstly, Greenly's origins and expertise in the Environmental space, aligned with the Paris Agreement, were appealing to us. Being aligned as closely as possible with the Paris agreement was a must for Merge. 

Additionally, we were attracted to Greenly's approach and tools for carbon data management. Your platform offered comprehensive carbon calculators and reporting tools that made it easy for us to track and analyze our emissions across different scopes and activities. The user-friendly interface and robust features paired with our dedicated support (shoutout to Victoria Reypin) allowed us to generate accurate reports and insights and efficiently communicate our journey. 

Overall, Greenly's tools simplified the process of GHG assessment and management for us, enabling us to focus on implementing strategies to minimize our environmental impact effectively.

Our carbon assessment revealed that our company emits 170.6 tCO2e per year across various scopes of our operations. This comprehensive analysis allowed us to identify key areas where emissions occur and prioritize action items to reduce our carbon footprint. 

One significant action item recommended by Greenly is to focus on energy efficiency measures within our traveling policies and criteria. This includes reevaluating and creating policies on traveling within the company. 

By reducing travel and streamlining through more virtual meets, we can directly decrease our emissions and lower our environmental impact. 

One of the main lessons we have learned from this carbon assessment is the importance of data accuracy and transparency. Accurate data collection and analysis are essential for understanding our emissions profile and identifying effective mitigation strategies. Additionally, transparency in reporting our emissions allows us to hold ourselves accountable and communicate our environmental impact to stakeholders effectively. As a result of this assessment, we have implemented several changes to reduce our emissions and improve our overall sustainability performance.

Did you already have an idea of your greenhouse gas emissions before calculating them with Greenly?

Before partnering with Greenly, we had an initial understanding of the importance of measuring our greenhouse gas emissions, but the detailed, comprehensive analysis provided by Greenly in both 2022 and 2023 allowed us to track our emissions with precision. This ongoing process has given us a clearer picture of our actual emissions across various scopes, allowing us to develop and refine our decarbonization strategy over time.

Had you implemented any CSR actions in your company before measuring your emissions?

Yes, SFA Group had already implemented several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions, such as eco-designing products, adopting sustainable procurement policies, and transitioning to low-carbon transportation options. The GHG assessment, however, has provided us with valuable data that supports continuous improvements and helps us better understand where our efforts are making the most impact.

We were particularly drawn to Greenly’s approach because it allowed us to track and measure emissions for our entire global group, which spans different regions and languages. The ability to break down the data and track emissions across various teams was crucial for us, especially given our diverse operations. As we worked with Greenly, we saw the platform evolve and adapt to our needs, making it more efficient and tailored to our global structure over time.

At the beginning, we faced some challenges, particularly with managing access across different teams and dealing with bugs in the solution, especially within the employee survey feature. However, Greenly’s team was very responsive and supportive. They worked closely with us to troubleshoot and improve the platform together. This collaboration allowed us to progressively refine the process, and we saw the platform evolve with new features that made our reporting and data management easier.

How did you find using Greenly's tools: SaaS, carbon calculators?

Initially, using the platform was a bit challenging due to the complexity of managing data for our entire group. Different teams needed separate access, and language barriers were an issue. However, as we continued to use the SaaS platform, we saw its capabilities grow and improve. Greenly's platform has become more intuitive, and the tools—like the carbon calculators—are now much more efficient, allowing us to better track and manage our emissions. With each iteration, it has become easier to use, and we appreciate how Greenly continues to refine the platform to meet our needs.

Our carbon assessment revealed that the majority of our emissions stem from Scope 3, particularly from activities such as purchased goods, freight, and waste management. To address these challenges, we have implemented several key initiatives:

Just as you wouldn’t embark on a weight loss journey without a scale, you can’t effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions without knowing where they stand. It’s not as daunting as it seems—start small, take it step by step, and remember, it’s possible for everyone to make a difference.

Maison Denis' dedication to combatting climate change is evident through its internal efforts in calculating and mitigating Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, recognizing the importance of addressing Scope 3 emissions, which often constitute a significant portion of overall emissions, the group sought assistance from Greenly for a comprehensive carbon assessment. Despite no regulatory obligation, Maison Denis voluntarily engaged with Greenly to gain insights into its carbon footprint, emphasizing a proactive approach towards sustainability.

The decision to select Greenly was taken following a thorough evaluation process of several service providers offering similar solutions. We conducted then a satisfactory pilot project with one of our companies based in Singapore. It convinced us to deploy the greenhouse gas assessment to 13 of our entities.

We were interested in the simplicity in apprehending and calculating Scope 3 emissions. Greenly's solution lies in its ability to harness financial data to streamline the complex process of emissions calculation. This capability is designed to simplify calculation workflows.

During the course of our collaboration, Greenly demonstrated availability and responsiveness. Regular meetings ensured that our project remained on track, fostering open communication and mutual understanding. Greenly understood our unique operational constraints, tailoring their approach to suit our specific needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy. This adaptability helps in ensuring a seamless experience. They also appear to be committed to continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and looking for ways to enhance the system.

While our expectations were generally aligned with the results provided by Greenly for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, delving into Scope 3 emissions opened a new level of insight and understanding. We approached the findings with a positive outlook, viewing them as validation of our ongoing efforts towards sustainability. It was gratifying to see that the products we offer inherently possess a low carbon footprint, reflecting our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. This reaffirmed our belief that we are moving in the right direction. 

We did not expect the relatively low impact of transportation on our overall emissions profile. Given our status as an international company with products distributed across various countries, we anticipated transportation to constitute a more significant portion of our carbon footprint. However, our reliance on long shelf-life products, such as canned and sterilized pouches transported mainly by sea freight, mitigated this impact. This realization underscored the importance of considering the entire product lifecycle in assessing emissions.

Another noteworthy observation was the significant contribution of packaging to our emissions profile. While not entirely unexpected, it served as a reminder of the need to continually improve our packaging practices. We are actively engaged in efforts to reduce packaging weight, enhance recyclability, and incorporate more recycled materials while keeping as the utmost priority the highest standard of food preservation and safety.

As we now have a comprehensive view of our emissions across all scopes, our focus is on developing a robust long-term roadmap to achieve our sustainability objectives.  While acknowledging the nuances surrounding terminologies such as “carbon neutrality” and “net-zero”, we are committed to making tangible progress in reducing our emissions. Our goal, aligned with the principles of net-zero emissions, is to achieve net zero by 2040. We are proud of the transparency we maintain regarding our emissions profile and are eager to share our progress with stakeholders through various channels, including our ESG reports.

In addressing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, our primary focus lies in optimizing energy consumption, particularly in electricity and fuel usage. We have dedicated resources to actively explore energy-saving measures, including potential upgrades to our factory’s machinery. Also, our internal communication efforts extend to engaging employees in our sustainability journey through initiatives such as EHS weeks and Climate Fresk. Regarding Scope 3 emissions, our strategy centers on engaging with our suppliers to drive collective action towards emissions reduction. While recognizing the challenges posed by our diverse supplier base, we are committed to fostering collaboration and encouraging adherence to sustainability standards.
