Embarking on the sustainability journey may seem daunting, but the first step is crucial: measure your impact. Just as you wouldn’t embark on a weight loss journey without a scale, you can’t effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions without knowing where they stand. It’s not as daunting as it seems—start small, take it step by step, and remember, it’s possible for everyone to make a difference.

Maison Denis' dedication to combatting climate change is evident through its internal efforts in calculating and mitigating Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, recognizing the importance of addressing Scope 3 emissions, which often constitute a significant portion of overall emissions, the group sought assistance from Greenly for a comprehensive carbon assessment. Despite no regulatory obligation, Maison Denis voluntarily engaged with Greenly to gain insights into its carbon footprint, emphasizing a proactive approach towards sustainability.

The decision to select Greenly was taken following a thorough evaluation process of several service providers offering similar solutions. We conducted then a satisfactory pilot project with one of our companies based in Singapore. It convinced us to deploy the greenhouse gas assessment to 13 of our entities.

We were interested in the simplicity in apprehending and calculating Scope 3 emissions. Greenly's solution lies in its ability to harness financial data to streamline the complex process of emissions calculation. This capability is designed to simplify calculation workflows.

During the course of our collaboration, Greenly demonstrated availability and responsiveness. Regular meetings ensured that our project remained on track, fostering open communication and mutual understanding. Greenly understood our unique operational constraints, tailoring their approach to suit our specific needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy. This adaptability helps in ensuring a seamless experience. They also appear to be committed to continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and looking for ways to enhance the system.

While our expectations were generally aligned with the results provided by Greenly for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, delving into Scope 3 emissions opened a new level of insight and understanding. We approached the findings with a positive outlook, viewing them as validation of our ongoing efforts towards sustainability. It was gratifying to see that the products we offer inherently possess a low carbon footprint, reflecting our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. This reaffirmed our belief that we are moving in the right direction. 

We did not expect the relatively low impact of transportation on our overall emissions profile. Given our status as an international company with products distributed across various countries, we anticipated transportation to constitute a more significant portion of our carbon footprint. However, our reliance on long shelf-life products, such as canned and sterilized pouches transported mainly by sea freight, mitigated this impact. This realization underscored the importance of considering the entire product lifecycle in assessing emissions.

Another noteworthy observation was the significant contribution of packaging to our emissions profile. While not entirely unexpected, it served as a reminder of the need to continually improve our packaging practices. We are actively engaged in efforts to reduce packaging weight, enhance recyclability, and incorporate more recycled materials while keeping as the utmost priority the highest standard of food preservation and safety.

As we now have a comprehensive view of our emissions across all scopes, our focus is on developing a robust long-term roadmap to achieve our sustainability objectives.  While acknowledging the nuances surrounding terminologies such as “carbon neutrality” and “net-zero”, we are committed to making tangible progress in reducing our emissions. Our goal, aligned with the principles of net-zero emissions, is to achieve net zero by 2040. We are proud of the transparency we maintain regarding our emissions profile and are eager to share our progress with stakeholders through various channels, including our ESG reports.

In addressing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, our primary focus lies in optimizing energy consumption, particularly in electricity and fuel usage. We have dedicated resources to actively explore energy-saving measures, including potential upgrades to our factory’s machinery. Also, our internal communication efforts extend to engaging employees in our sustainability journey through initiatives such as EHS weeks and Climate Fresk. Regarding Scope 3 emissions, our strategy centers on engaging with our suppliers to drive collective action towards emissions reduction. While recognizing the challenges posed by our diverse supplier base, we are committed to fostering collaboration and encouraging adherence to sustainability standards. We are confident that legal, economic and technical contexts should soon evolve faster.

In order to achieve our ambitions to become Net Zero by 2040, we set out to firstly measure and understand our emissions across our value chain. This has been a critical initial step in moving towards our reduction targets. Identifying the areas of our business that have the largest impact and subsequently where we can make the most effective changes has been transformational to the way that we manage our emissions. Transparency is also something that is important to us and carrying out a GHG assessment with an accredited partner such as Greenly allows us to confidently share our data and the progress that we are making each year with our consumers.

As an SME with limited time and resource to manage carbon accounting, Greenly stood out to us as a company that worked well with smaller businesses to make the process as easy as possible to engage with. We particularly appreciated the supplier module and their approach to employee engagement through the team survey and additional Greenly Academy content. At every turn the Greenly team were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, giving us the confidence that we are managing our carbon data in a responsible way for the future.

We worked with Greenly to understand our emissions backdated from 2020 onwards. This gave us multiple years of data to review and helped us understand how our growth as a business in the last few years has also impacted our carbon footprint. 

Like many businesses over 90% of our emissions sit within Scope 3 and therefore one of our first actions post assessment, has been to engage with our suppliers through the Greenly platform. This supplier engagement will help to further enhance our Scope 3 data thus making it easier to identify future reduction opportunities. 

The assessment has assisted us to improve our data reporting which has involved capturing more activity based information rather than spend in several areas of our operations. Greenly have helped to inform and educate our team on ways to make positive changes to their lifestyles. Our consumers have also reacted positively to our climate impact transparency and reduction plans.

We decided to carry out a greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment as part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainability. By understanding our emissions footprint, we can identify areas where we can reduce our environmental impact and make more informed decisions to mitigate climate change. Before calculating our emissions with Greenly, we had very little idea of our environmental footprint based on our operations, energy usage, and other factors. However, using Greenly not only provided us with a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of our GHG emissions across different scopes and activities but helped us implement various initiatives aimed at minimizing our environmental impact and contributing positively to society. These initiatives included waste reduction programs, energy efficiency measures, community engagement projects, and supporting sustainable practices throughout our supply chain.

We chose Greenly for several reasons that align with our values and needs. Firstly, Greenly's origins and expertise in the Environmental space, aligned with the Paris Agreement, were appealing to us. Being aligned as closely as possible with the Paris agreement was a must for Merge. 

Additionally, we were attracted to Greenly's approach and tools for carbon data management. Your platform offered comprehensive carbon calculators and reporting tools that made it easy for us to track and analyze our emissions across different scopes and activities. The user-friendly interface and robust features paired with our dedicated support (shoutout to Victoria Reypin) allowed us to generate accurate reports and insights and efficiently communicate our journey. 

Overall, Greenly's tools simplified the process of GHG assessment and management for us, enabling us to focus on implementing strategies to minimize our environmental impact effectively.

Our carbon assessment revealed that our company emits 170.6 tCO2e per year across various scopes of our operations. This comprehensive analysis allowed us to identify key areas where emissions occur and prioritize action items to reduce our carbon footprint. 

One significant action item recommended by Greenly is to focus on energy efficiency measures within our traveling policies and criteria. This includes reevaluating and creating policies on traveling within the company. 

By reducing travel and streamlining through more virtual meets, we can directly decrease our emissions and lower our environmental impact. 

One of the main lessons we have learned from this carbon assessment is the importance of data accuracy and transparency. Accurate data collection and analysis are essential for understanding our emissions profile and identifying effective mitigation strategies. Additionally, transparency in reporting our emissions allows us to hold ourselves accountable and communicate our environmental impact to stakeholders effectively. As a result of this assessment, we have implemented several changes to reduce our emissions and improve our overall sustainability performance.

Kimya produces ready-to-use filaments and develops high quality, custom 3D printing materials. Since 2017, Kimya has forged strategic partnerships with leading 3D printer manufacturers (Stratasys, Raise 3D, miniFactory, Ultimaker and AON3D) aiming to get Kimya filaments standard in their machines and making the printing process easier for users. With several dozen employees, Kimya has a 2,000m2 production facility in France.

ITV - What motivated you to do an initial Life Cycle Analysis? Why did you choose Greenly? 🤔

To answer your question, we have to go back in time a bit and recall that Kimya was originally created to bring innovative materials to the 3D printing industry with the aim of developing more responsible production. That is why in 2018, we decided to participate in the Orplast project, initiated by the ADEME, which aims to meet national plastic recycling goals. The goal is to increase annual consumption of MPR (recycled raw materials) plastic by 250,000 tonnes. In this context, we have been creating and producing 3D filaments from recycled materials. We now have 5 products in the Remake By Kimya line. 

With this LCA we wanted to go beyond marketing and collect quantifiable data on the environmental impact of our recycled filaments compared to our standard ones. We opted for Greenly because you offered a great experience that was accessible in both technical terms and financially.

What did you think of Greenly's support? 📊

We had a positive experience working with expert support, and were empowered to fully understand our emissions, ask our questions, and progress together. The final LCA certificate was very helpful for us. We also appreciated the support provided for our marketing communications. The schedule was very clear with a sharp distinction between the technical phase and the various communication stages to avoid any mistakes that could be construed as greenwashing.

What was your experience with our software? What did you think?🌱

Firstly, we found the SaaS very easy to use, and we really liked the interface for viewing the results and data tables. It's important to remember, however, that this was a new experience for us, as it was our first LCA. We had to learn about many technical details without prior mastery in this area. We researched and learned a lot about the methodology.

I had no idea the percentage reduction in CO2 impact or weight in kilograms. I was just expecting to have more positive numbers by switching to recycled PETG. What’s interesting is that this brought us an awareness of all the components and logistics that go into the life of a product. This study has really increased our R&D team’s awareness. Since then, we have continued working on improvements by changing our packaging and trying to find new eco-friendly components.

Regarding the filaments, there weren’t any specific goals or changes implemented, although comparing our products showed significant differences: using a PETG-R recycled Kimya filament reduces emissions by 35% (in kg of CO2) compared to the Kimya PETG-S standard filament. Additionally, when we studied our flanges (which hold the 3D filaments), the results were even more significant. 

We compared three types of material (virgin plastic, recycled plastic, recycled PC and cardboard): the flange made of recycled polycarbonate gave us a 50% emissions reduction compared to non-recycled polycarbonate. Similarly, we also saw that the environmental impact was considerably reduced by switching to cardboard: an emissions' reduction of 65% during product manufacturing and 66% for its end-of-life. 

Regarding ongoing actions, we are working on changing the flange packaging as well as investigating the possibility of changing the flange. We have switched the packaging to a recycled kraft cardboard box. The ink is water-soluble. We need to investigate other components such as tape. The cardboard is already recycled. And then, there is the flange itself. 

Today, our flange is made of 95% recycled PC. We are still working on this, but we haven’t yet identified a good solution from a technical or economical perspective. However, the LCA has given us the necessary impetus to restart the discussion and switch to cardboard flanges in due course.

What would you say to a company hesitating to do an LCA? 👀

I would encourage them to do it since it is eye-opening for any business. And an LCA will also give you an edge with any customers who have an environmentally responsible purchasing policy. Finally, it facilitates a different approach to new product design. It is a winning investment which leads toward asking yourself the right questions!

I am Elle Parker, the Global Sustainability Strategy Lead at Tenth Revolution Group. In this role, I oversee the sustainability strategy and carbon reduction initiatives for our entire group, including Frank Recruitment Group, Revolent, and Rebura.

Why did you carry out a carbon assessment?

Our commitment to sustainability has been evident through our internal reporting of Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2018. However, we recognized the need to comprehensively address Scope 3 emissions—a substantial component of our carbon footprint. In 2022, we partnered with Greenly to gain a holistic understanding of our emissions. This decision was partly influenced by industry leaders such as Microsoft and Salesforce, who emphasize the importance of working with eco-conscious partners, making it essential for us to be well-prepared for inquiries regarding our environmental efforts. 

Regarding regulations, is this something that you also are trying to anticipate?

In line with our proactive approach, we are preparing for forthcoming regulations that will impact our business operations. Voluntary reporting is an essential step for us, ensuring we align ourselves with emerging environmental standards.

Choosing to work with Greenly for our carbon assessment was a well-informed decision. Our interactions with Greenly's Account Executive, Theo, and Account Manager, Martin, were highly productive, and we had full confidence in their abilities to support our goals. Their expertise, coupled with the user-friendly platform, made Greenly a fitting choice. Plus, Greenly's focus on the technology sector meant there was a strong affinity with our industry, further solidifying our choice. 

What are the main lessons you have learned from this carbon assessment?

Our carbon assessment with Greenly helped us to identify the prominence of Scope 3 emissions across our organization, with business travel being a notable contributor. While this insight wasn't entirely unexpected, the extent of Scope 3 emissions (constituting approximately 94%) was eye-opening. The assessment also highlighted our digital footprint, pointing to areas that warrant further exploration and mitigation. 

Short-, Medium-, and Long-term Outlook: Our objective is to leverage the action plans recommended by Greenly to reduce emissions, in collaboration with their climate expert, Quentin, as we work on a Science-Based-Target reduction plan. These actions will pave the way for a more sustainable future for our business.

Impact Within and Outside the Company: Externally, we've observed an increased emphasis on sustainability in customer bids and tenders. The questions posed by customers, particularly regarding our sustainability efforts, have grown in frequency and significance. Furthermore, our investors, as private equity stakeholders, now request annual ESG reports. Internally, our employees are telling us that sustainability is important to them, with 70%  saying it is important to them that we are a socially and environmentally sustainable business in our latest employee survey. This growing emphasis on sustainability among customers, vendors, investors, and our employees underscores its rising importance.

What would you say to a hesitant company?

To companies hesitant about embarking on a carbon footprint analysis, I urge you to initiate the process. Starting may seem daunting, but it provides a holistic view of your carbon footprint, pinpointing key areas for improvement. Utilizing available data enables you to identify hotspots and areas for improvement and take meaningful action promptly. Sustainability is of paramount importance, and small steps taken sooner rather than later can lead to substantial positive outcomes.

We cannot improve what we do not measure. That’s why the main purpose of the carbon assessment with Greenly was to establish our emissions baselines across Scopes 1-3 needed to support our Net Zero goal set for 2030.

Embracing sustainability at Collectiv Food means partnering with the best. That's why Greenly was our choice for measuring our company-wide carbon footprint for the first time. 

Their robust methodology, covering scope 1, 2, and 3 analysis, set the stage for effective action while Greenly's platform wowed us with its smart UI – supporting a smooth data collection process through to developing insights effortlessly. But it's not just about tech; they helped us engage our team, making sustainability a shared journey.

Collectiv Food’s carbon footprint takes into account direct and energy emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also indirect emissions caused by service providers and services used by the company (Scope 3). Adding up all the emissions, Collectiv Food had a carbon footprint of 5987t CO2e in 2021.

2. Engage and Connect: Sustainability isn't a solo act. We're reaching out, building bridges, and fostering connections within our ecosystem. Communication is our catalyst for change.

3. Offsetting with Certified Impact: As part of our forward plan, once we've maximized our reduction efforts, we're diving into certified GHG offsetting and sequestration projects. These aren't just offsets; they're verified, impactful changes that resonate with our commitment to Net Zero.

Considering the alarming IPCC reports and the clear interest of students in socio-ecological issues and their initiatives in this regard, and considering the importance of training enlightened citizens, responsible stewards who are aware of the social and moral consequences of their actions, it is crucial that emlyon business school adopts a strong environmental strategy through an ambitious climate plan and a commitment that extends throughout all aspects of the school from teaching to research. 

Thus, the school is committed to radically lower its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by following a plan in line with the Paris Accords.  More specifically, this translates to the goal of achieving Net Zero (a balance between emissions created and captured by carbon skins on a global scale) by 2050.

emlyon has already carried out an inventory of our GHG emissions. The school’s carbon footprint was 11 000t CO2 in 2022. This has allowed us to better structure our environmental policy and to develop our action plan to reduce our emissions over the long term.

After getting the results of the Carbon Footprint calculation, emlyon has strongly committed to a path of sustainable development, and has decided to go even further with this certification. 

The Net Zero Contributor Greenly certification attests to efforts made in support of global Net Zéro goals. Its purpose is to provide visibility to the most committed organizations alongside their emission reduction efforts.

emlyon’s action plan to reduce its emissions 📉

emlyon, in collaboration with Greenly, has implemented a specific action plan: 

Energy action plan: stop using gas for heating systems (Lyon campus), reduce heating temperatures, maintenance of cooling systems.

Digital action plan: upgrade IT equipment with refurbished devices and increase their lifespan, practice a responsible digital approach, optimize data storage by deleting old data.  

Commuting action plan: shift to reduce car and plane travel.

Purchasing action plan: rate suppliers on their commitments, take CSR criteria into account on all purchases, raise awareness of responsible purchasing among buyers.

The objective is to have a solution that is fast, intuitive and automated, which allows employers to easily and independently manage payroll and human resources, saving precious time. We do everything we can to have a positive impact on the world we live in, that's our ambition. And that's PayFit's mission: to make PayFiters proud of what we do for society, to preserve the environment, and also to promote diversity and inclusion. Regarding the environment, more specifically, we are all aware that it is not a question of choice or beliefs, but that it is really the biggest challenge of our time, and that obviously the first step is to understand our own environmental impact, to better assess and improve it.</p><p><strong>Why Greenly?</strong></p><p>When we decided to do our carbon assessment, we realized that there are two schools of thought today. On the one hand, there is the classic school of using a consultancy firm, and on the other hand, there is a start-up solution like Greenly. In this overview of these two solutions, we have realized that both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of consultancies is that they are focused on support, offering a very detailed analysis, but they are also more expensive and time consuming<br>. &nbsp;A start-up, however, will stand out for its speed. What interested us for this first assessment was to have a fairly quick overview of our impact, so that we could start acting quickly.</p><p>‍</p><h2>Update on PayFit's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>Our first assessment gave us a quick overview of our emissions, which allowed us to distinguish PayFit's main emission items. We realised the importance of Scope 3, although it is not currently mandatory to assess it. However, at PayFit, it is the most important emission item. Since we offer SaaS, we also noticed that the second most important emissions item was Digital. We were surprised by the low percentage of emissions that travel occupied, even if this result is linked to the context of the year 2020, which has strongly contributed to reducing the use of transport. We will therefore pay attention to this in the years to come. Finally, our third emissions item concerned fixed assets. To achieve our objective, we intend to involve managers for each major emission item. We are therefore going to work together with the departments concerned to define the possible and impactful reduction actions, while respecting the 2021 development and growth objectives that have been defined. I am quite convinced that it is not just me, as the CSR manager, who can implement reduction actions on my own. You have to involve all the stakeholders in the company. The objective is to reconcile the response to climate and environmental issues with the growth of our company. To do this, we must already have a better understanding of our uses, such as in terms of actions for the use of our servers and our online advertising, but also in terms of thinking about how to have a more responsible purchasing policy</p><div class="container_img"><img src="" loading="lazy" /></div><h2></h2>
