Methodological update for cloud emissions *

Since 2020, Platform.sh has been calculating its direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2025, Platform.sh collaborated with Greenly to develop a new methodological approach, enhancing the way it calculates cloud emissions for its customers. As a multicloud platform, Platform.sh aimed to create a reporting system that is agnostic to Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and based on location-specific carbon intensity data, addressing the inconsistencies in CSP reporting. Although carbon footprinting is an evolving process, our teams are dedicated to improving the accuracy of these calculations. The emissions data for 2024 and 2023 have been updated accordingly, and any significant updates will be communicated to customers who request this information.

This methodology is based on the continuous work of Greenly, One byte model, Cloudcarbonfootprint and Boavitza.

Embarking on the sustainability journey may seem daunting, but the first step is crucial: measure your impact. Just as you wouldn’t embark on a weight loss journey without a scale, you can’t effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions without knowing where they stand. It’s not as daunting as it seems—start small, take it step by step, and remember, it’s possible for everyone to make a difference.

Maison Denis' dedication to combatting climate change is evident through its internal efforts in calculating and mitigating Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, recognizing the importance of addressing Scope 3 emissions, which often constitute a significant portion of overall emissions, the group sought assistance from Greenly for a comprehensive carbon assessment. Despite no regulatory obligation, Maison Denis voluntarily engaged with Greenly to gain insights into its carbon footprint, emphasizing a proactive approach towards sustainability.

The decision to select Greenly was taken following a thorough evaluation process of several service providers offering similar solutions. We conducted then a satisfactory pilot project with one of our companies based in Singapore. It convinced us to deploy the greenhouse gas assessment to 13 of our entities.

We were interested in the simplicity in apprehending and calculating Scope 3 emissions. Greenly's solution lies in its ability to harness financial data to streamline the complex process of emissions calculation. This capability is designed to simplify calculation workflows.

During the course of our collaboration, Greenly demonstrated availability and responsiveness. Regular meetings ensured that our project remained on track, fostering open communication and mutual understanding. Greenly understood our unique operational constraints, tailoring their approach to suit our specific needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy. This adaptability helps in ensuring a seamless experience. They also appear to be committed to continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and looking for ways to enhance the system.

While our expectations were generally aligned with the results provided by Greenly for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, delving into Scope 3 emissions opened a new level of insight and understanding. We approached the findings with a positive outlook, viewing them as validation of our ongoing efforts towards sustainability. It was gratifying to see that the products we offer inherently possess a low carbon footprint, reflecting our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. This reaffirmed our belief that we are moving in the right direction. 

We did not expect the relatively low impact of transportation on our overall emissions profile. Given our status as an international company with products distributed across various countries, we anticipated transportation to constitute a more significant portion of our carbon footprint. However, our reliance on long shelf-life products, such as canned and sterilized pouches transported mainly by sea freight, mitigated this impact. This realization underscored the importance of considering the entire product lifecycle in assessing emissions.

Another noteworthy observation was the significant contribution of packaging to our emissions profile. While not entirely unexpected, it served as a reminder of the need to continually improve our packaging practices. We are actively engaged in efforts to reduce packaging weight, enhance recyclability, and incorporate more recycled materials while keeping as the utmost priority the highest standard of food preservation and safety.

As we now have a comprehensive view of our emissions across all scopes, our focus is on developing a robust long-term roadmap to achieve our sustainability objectives.  While acknowledging the nuances surrounding terminologies such as “carbon neutrality” and “net-zero”, we are committed to making tangible progress in reducing our emissions. Our goal, aligned with the principles of net-zero emissions, is to achieve net zero by 2040. We are proud of the transparency we maintain regarding our emissions profile and are eager to share our progress with stakeholders through various channels, including our ESG reports.

In addressing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, our primary focus lies in optimizing energy consumption, particularly in electricity and fuel usage. We have dedicated resources to actively explore energy-saving measures, including potential upgrades to our factory’s machinery. Also, our internal communication efforts extend to engaging employees in our sustainability journey through initiatives such as EHS weeks and Climate Fresk. Regarding Scope 3 emissions, our strategy centers on engaging with our suppliers to drive collective action towards emissions reduction. While recognizing the challenges posed by our diverse supplier base, we are committed to fostering collaboration and encouraging adherence to sustainability standards. We are confident that legal, economic and technical contexts should soon evolve faster.

Why did you decide to carry out a GHG assessment? 🤔

At ZEUS Packaging Ltd., we believe that understanding our environmental impact is crucial to driving meaningful change. By conducting a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) assessment, we aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of our carbon footprint, identify areas for improvement, and implement effective strategies to reduce our emissions. This assessment not only aligns with our corporate social responsibility goals but also meets the increasing demands from our investors and clients for transparent and accountable environmental practices.

Before partnering with Greenly, we had a general sense of our emissions but lacked the detailed, data-driven insights necessary to make targeted improvements. Also, we had already initiated several CSR initiatives, such as reducing energy consumption in our operations and promoting recycling programs. The GHG assessment with Greenly helped us quantify these efforts and identify additional opportunities for reduction.

Our carbon assessment with Greenly revealed that we emit almost 200k tCO2e annually. To address this, we are exploring the implementation of several action items, initially placing focus on our Scope 1 & 2 emissions but also including adopting a responsible purchasing policy that prioritises suppliers with strong environmental credentials. We plan to invest in energy-efficient technologies, exploring alternative fuels for our fleet and enhancing our recycling programs to further reduce our emissions. These steps are part of our broader strategy to achieve a significant reduction in our carbon footprint over the next five years.


The assessment taught us the importance of accurate data collection and the need for continuous monitoring to make meaningful progress. It also highlighted areas where we can make impactful changes, particularly in our supply chain and operational efficiency.

We are implementing a responsible purchasing policy, upgraded our facilities with energy-efficient lighting and equipment, and enhanced our recycling programs. Additionally, we have started engaging our employees in sustainability initiatives to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

I am Elle Parker, the Global Sustainability Strategy Lead at Tenth Revolution Group. In this role, I oversee the sustainability strategy and carbon reduction initiatives for our entire group, including Frank Recruitment Group, Revolent, and Rebura.

Why did you carry out a carbon assessment?

Our commitment to sustainability has been evident through our internal reporting of Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2018. However, we recognized the need to comprehensively address Scope 3 emissions—a substantial component of our carbon footprint. In 2022, we partnered with Greenly to gain a holistic understanding of our emissions. This decision was partly influenced by industry leaders such as Microsoft and Salesforce, who emphasize the importance of working with eco-conscious partners, making it essential for us to be well-prepared for inquiries regarding our environmental efforts. 

Regarding regulations, is this something that you also are trying to anticipate?

In line with our proactive approach, we are preparing for forthcoming regulations that will impact our business operations. Voluntary reporting is an essential step for us, ensuring we align ourselves with emerging environmental standards.

Choosing to work with Greenly for our carbon assessment was a well-informed decision. Our interactions with Greenly's Account Executive, Theo, and Account Manager, Martin, were highly productive, and we had full confidence in their abilities to support our goals. Their expertise, coupled with the user-friendly platform, made Greenly a fitting choice. Plus, Greenly's focus on the technology sector meant there was a strong affinity with our industry, further solidifying our choice. 

What are the main lessons you have learned from this carbon assessment?

Our carbon assessment with Greenly helped us to identify the prominence of Scope 3 emissions across our organization, with business travel being a notable contributor. While this insight wasn't entirely unexpected, the extent of Scope 3 emissions (constituting approximately 94%) was eye-opening. The assessment also highlighted our digital footprint, pointing to areas that warrant further exploration and mitigation. 

Short-, Medium-, and Long-term Outlook: Our objective is to leverage the action plans recommended by Greenly to reduce emissions, in collaboration with their climate expert, Quentin, as we work on a Science-Based-Target reduction plan. These actions will pave the way for a more sustainable future for our business.

Impact Within and Outside the Company: Externally, we've observed an increased emphasis on sustainability in customer bids and tenders. The questions posed by customers, particularly regarding our sustainability efforts, have grown in frequency and significance. Furthermore, our investors, as private equity stakeholders, now request annual ESG reports. Internally, our employees are telling us that sustainability is important to them, with 70%  saying it is important to them that we are a socially and environmentally sustainable business in our latest employee survey. This growing emphasis on sustainability among customers, vendors, investors, and our employees underscores its rising importance.

What would you say to a hesitant company?

To companies hesitant about embarking on a carbon footprint analysis, I urge you to initiate the process. Starting may seem daunting, but it provides a holistic view of your carbon footprint, pinpointing key areas for improvement. Utilizing available data enables you to identify hotspots and areas for improvement and take meaningful action promptly. Sustainability is of paramount importance, and small steps taken sooner rather than later can lead to substantial positive outcomes.

GLC is a group of paper price label companies servicing 1000s of retailers in North America.  The GLC consortium wanted a clear understanding, along with a scientific approach, how sustainable paper labels are versus other forms of signage in the retail environment. GLC’s objective is to share with retailers real research on the sustainability of paper ensuring the carbon footprint is as low as possible for each and every retail location over long periods of time.

ITV - What motivated you to do an initial Life Cycle Analysis? Why did you choose Greenly? 🤔

The study sought to comprehensively evaluate the environmental impact of two primary labeling systems: traditional paper price labels and the electronic shelf labels (ESLs). Specifically, it aimed to scrutinize each stage of their life cycles, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal.

Driven by a pervasive industry narrative emphasizing sustainability through waste prevention, GLC embarked on the study to validate these claims. The increasing adoption of ESLs was seen as a potential solution to mitigate the environmental impact associated with frequent paper label changes. 

What did you think of Greenly's support? 📊

Greenly's credibility and extensive collaboration with paper label-related companies made them the natural choice for this study. Their holistic approach and expertise in comparing the production processes and life cycles of paper labels and ESLs were instrumental in steering the research.

GLC particularly appreciated Greenly's commitment to conducting thorough research. Greenly organized a comprehensive study that delved into the intricacies of paper label production, including factors such as printer efficiency and the environmental implications of wireless router usage.

What were the Scopes & Boundaries of the Study? 🌱

The study's scope spanned the entire life cycle of both labeling systems, encompassing aspects from tree growth and carbon removal during paper production to the disposal processes of both paper labels and ESLs. A global perspective was adopted, acknowledging the international reach of the grocery industry and its significant carbon footprint.

Data collection drew from a combination of primary and proprietary sources. Paper label companies provided valuable insights into chemical composition, characteristics, and annual price change data, ensuring a robust foundation for comprehensive analysis.

The study revealed a nuanced picture from a 30,000-foot perspective, demonstrating that the global production and transportation processes associated with ESLs resulted in a higher carbon footprint compared to the localized production of paper labels. Contrary to longstanding claims, ESLs were found to have a larger environmental impact.

The study's findings underscored the environmental benefits of paper labels over ESLs. GLC recommends a conscious evaluation of these findings within the retail sector, emphasizing the importance of adopting truly sustainable practices in labeling and display technologies.

Motivated by the study, GLC is committed to disseminating honest information within the retail industry. The goal is to foster a more transparent understanding of what genuinely constitutes eco-friendly practices, influencing decision-making across the sector.

The study has ignited a critical conversation about sustainability within the retail sector. It serves as a catalyst for reevaluating industry practices and committing to genuine environmental conservation efforts.

As of now, further implications and actions are under consideration. The study has opened the door to a more conscientious approach to sustainability in our operations.

A pioneer in additive manufacturing, Kimya, an Armor Group company, designs and produces 3D printing materials for local production. Kimya produces ready-to-use filaments and develops high quality, custom 3D printing materials. Since 2017, Kimya has forged strategic partnerships with leading 3D printer manufacturers (Stratasys, Raise 3D, miniFactory, Ultimaker and AON3D) aiming to get Kimya filaments standard in their machines and making the printing process easier for users. With several dozen employees, Kimya has a 2,000m2 production facility in France.

Thanks to his expertise in marketing strategy and his interest in sustainable development initiatives, he has taken innovative action to measure the carbon footprint of Kimya products. His commitment to environmental awareness enables him promote the business as a group committed to sustainable development.

To answer your question, we have to go back in time a bit and recall that Kimya was originally created to bring innovative materials to the 3D printing industry with the aim of developing more responsible production. That is why in 2018, we decided to participate in the Orplast project, initiated by the ADEME, which aims to meet national plastic recycling goals. The goal is to increase annual consumption of MPR (recycled raw materials) plastic by 250,000 tonnes. In this context, we have been creating and producing 3D filaments from recycled materials. We now have 5 products in the Remake By Kimya line. 

With this LCA we wanted to go beyond marketing and collect quantifiable data on the environmental impact of our recycled filaments compared to our standard ones. We opted for Greenly because you offered a great experience that was accessible in both technical terms and financially.

We had a positive experience working with expert support, and were empowered to fully understand our emissions, ask our questions, and progress together. The final LCA certificate was very helpful for us. We also appreciated the support provided for our marketing communications. The schedule was very clear with a sharp distinction between the technical phase and the various communication stages to avoid any mistakes that could be construed as greenwashing.

What was your experience with our software? What did you think?🌱

Firstly, we found the SaaS very easy to use, and we really liked the interface for viewing the results and data tables. It's important to remember, however, that this was a new experience for us, as it was our first LCA. We had to learn about many technical details without prior mastery in this area. We researched and learned a lot about the methodology.

I had no idea the percentage reduction in CO2 impact or weight in kilograms. I was just expecting to have more positive numbers by switching to recycled PETG. What’s interesting is that this brought us an awareness of all the components and logistics that go into the life of a product. This study has really increased our R&D team’s awareness. Since then, we have continued working on improvements by changing our packaging and trying to find new eco-friendly components.

Regarding the filaments, there weren’t any specific goals or changes implemented, although comparing our products showed significant differences: using a PETG-R recycled Kimya filament reduces emissions by 35% (in kg of CO2) compared to the Kimya PETG-S standard filament. Additionally, when we studied our flanges (which hold the 3D filaments), the results were even more significant. 

We compared three types of material (virgin plastic, recycled plastic, recycled PC and cardboard): the flange made of recycled polycarbonate gave us a 50% emissions reduction compared to non-recycled polycarbonate. Similarly, we also saw that the environmental impact was considerably reduced by switching to cardboard: an emissions' reduction of 65% during product manufacturing and 66% for its end-of-life. 

Regarding ongoing actions, we are working on changing the flange packaging as well as investigating the possibility of changing the flange. We have switched the packaging to a recycled kraft cardboard box. The ink is water-soluble. We need to investigate other components such as tape. The cardboard is already recycled. And then, there is the flange itself. 

Today, our flange is made of 95% recycled PC. We are still working on this, but we haven’t yet identified a good solution from a technical or economical perspective. However, the LCA has given us the necessary impetus to restart the discussion and switch to cardboard flanges in due course.

What would you say to a company hesitating to do an LCA? 👀

I would encourage them to do it since it is eye-opening for any business. And an LCA will also give you an edge with any customers who have an environmentally responsible purchasing policy. Finally, it facilitates a different approach to new product design. It is a winning investment which leads toward asking yourself the right questions!

Additionally, we are striving to reduce packaging weight, increase the use of recycled materials, optimize logistics for efficient truck routing, and gradually shift our vehicle fleet from gas to electric vehicles. Our plans also include offering eco-driving courses to our employees to further embed sustainable practices across our operations.

What were the key motivations for Alchemy to collaborate with Greenly and conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)? ⭐️

The decision to partner with Greenly and undertake a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) grew from a need to provide consumers and businesses with a truly transparent view of the carbon footprint savings associated with purchasing refurbished devices. We sought to go beyond the prevalent use of generic data and become the first company in the circular tech market to certify the CO2 savings achievable through the refurbishment process.

Greenly's leadership in carbon and product life cycle assessments played a pivotal role in guiding us through the LCA process. The collaboration involved comprehensive support, ranging from helping the team understand the intricacies of the process to ensuring the collection of data followed best practices. Greenly's climate experts audited the provided data, culminating in the development of a sophisticated carbon calculator that precisely measures and summarizes the CO2 impact of Alchemy's refurbishment operations.

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted with Greenly adopted a multi-dimensional approach, evaluating various aspects of our operations. This included an in-depth analysis of the entire lifecycle of refurbished devices, encompassing collection, refurbishment processes, transportation, packaging, use, and end-of-life considerations. The assessment was further tailored to different product lines, regions, and channels, providing a nuanced understanding of the environmental impact across diverse parameters.

The LCA results unveiled compelling insights into the environmental impact of refurbished devices across different product lines. Notably, smartphones, tablets, wearables, and laptops exhibited substantial reductions in CO2 emissions compared to their new counterparts. For instance, smartphones emitted only 1 kgCO2e during the refurbishment process, showcasing a significant positive impact on sustainability.

There are plans in motion to initiate a corporate carbon assessment in the medium term, further underscoring Alchemy’s commitment to reducing its own environmental footprint.

On the B2C front, the ability to communicate the specific CO2 savings associated with each refurbished device is a game-changer. Alchemy is not merely presenting a generic category statistic but is now capable of offering a tailored and detailed breakdown of the carbon footprint savings to individual customers. This personalized approach provides reassurance and empowers consumers to make informed decisions based on their device, model, and region.

For  B2B, Alchemy is actively assisting companies in aligning with their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies. When businesses opt for refurbished devices from Alchemy for their employees, they are not only making a sustainable choice but also contributing positively towards their ESG goals. Alchemy can now measure and certify this positive impact and contribution.

The analysis shed light on some unexpected environmental impacts, particularly in the realm of transportation, which accounts for approximately 90% of our emissions, excluding use and end-of-life stages.

One significant revelation was the potential for substantial environmental and cost savings through more strategic logistic choices. Recognizing the environmental impact associated with our global sourcing practices (upstream) and the expedited shipping approach driven by customer and market expectations, we are actively exploring opportunities for improvement.

How has the collaboration with Greenly and the LCA process helped Alchemy enhance its sustainability performance and communicate its environmental efforts to stakeholders? 📚

Prior to the collaboration with Greenly, Alchemy, like its peers, relied on market generic data about the impact of manufacturing new products to communicate the eco benefits of refurbished devices.
