Using Platform.sh’ 2020 data, Greenly performed a density study to see how efficiently Platform.sh uses CPUs in the cloud compared to a standard deployment (AWS Elastic Cloud 2).

Platform.sh density was on average 12x more dense for their offering with the highest mutualization possible (grid) – -this means 12x less electricity was used to run an equivalent workload. More specifically, the breakdown was:

And 5x more dense for clients that requested low mutualization of resources (dedicated). 

This reduction in resource use, means less electricity is used by the datacenter, and ultimately lower CO2 emissions. On average for the globe, this translated into a 9x lower CO2 emission factor compared to the “bare mental scenario” due to Platform.sh superior density offer for their highly mutualized approach and 6x lower emissions for the less mutualized approach.

If it is deactivated, activate it from your Client Area on the mabanque.bnpparibas website.</p><h2>Your questions about the My Carbon Footprint tool: Carbon Footprint, why is it important to reduce it?</h2><p>Without a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activity, the average global surface temperature would rise by 2°C to 3.5°C by 2100, according to projections by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). This global warming suggests an increase in the number of extreme weather events, in particular droughts, rising oceans and ocean acidification, with many negative consequences for human health and development.In 2016, the countries that signed the Paris Agreement agreed to limit their CO2 emissions to keep warming below 2°C. They committed to reducing the share of fossil fuels in production, and set an emissions target of about 2 tonnes of CO2 per year per capita. In 2018, the average carbon footprint of a French person was 11.2 t CO2eq per year. In addition to structural efforts to change our production patterns and have a positive impact on the environment, the commitment of individuals to decarbonising their consumption and lifestyle is essential to achieving these reduction targets.</p><div class="container_img"><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/6232f79b68d15d3d9b69c096/62399f9df582902e618d1362_61faa8a367ac21aba592d149_guy-bowden-lVDnLUACI18-unsplash-p-1080.jpg" loading="lazy" /></div><h2>How is my carbon footprint estimated?</h2><p>Your carbon footprint is estimated by calculating the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for each of your expenses (bank transactions recorded on your deposit account). The name of the transaction is used to categorise the expense and thus determine the type of shopping basket, product or service associated with it. A coefficient, specific to each purchase category or supplier, is applied to the amount of the expenditure. These coefficients, called "monetary emission factors", are used to convert euros into kg of CO2. Provided by the Greenly Participatory Carbon Benchmark, they correspond to the ratio of the emissions of a product or service to the price. They can also be calculated by taking the ratio of a sector's emissions to its turnover.<br></p><p>The estimation of your carbon footprint is accurate for expenditure on sectors whose products are homogeneous in terms of carbon intensity. These include:<br><strong>- transport (petrol),</strong><br><strong>- housing (electricity, gas, water</strong>, etc.)<br><strong>, - everyday services (Internet, telephone subscription),</strong><br><strong>- shopping baskets made up of similar products</strong>.<br><br>Conversely, the estimate is less accurate for sectors of activity where banking transactions refer to purchases made from heterogeneous product categories, such as food (meat and/or vegetables) or transport (aeroplane, train, etc.). <a href="https://mabanque.bnpparibas/fr/vos-besoins/vos-projets/transition-energetique-et-ecologique">BNP Paribas</a> is working to improve the way it takes into account individual behaviour and to refine these categories so that you can estimate your carbon footprint ever more accurately.</p><div class="container_img"><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/6232f79b68d15d3d9b69c096/62399fa0b2ec3f2fe1089bfc_61faa8b16d5cb40b80fbcb41_ash-from-modern-afflatus-NQ6Lh81BTRs-unsplash-p-2600.jpg" loading="lazy" /></div><h2>How can I refine my carbon footprint estimate?</h2><p>It is possible to refine the estimate for certain categories of expenditure, in particular food and transport, by analysing the nature of your expenditure in more detail. Your eating habits have an impact on your carbon footprint estimate. The carbon footprint of your food is calculated on the basis of an average meal. To obtain a more accurate estimate, you can multiply the results obtained using the "My Carbon Footprint" estimator available on your My Accounts application (section...) by one of the following coefficients.<br></p><p>For your supermarket purchases (category "Food, supermarket"):<br><strong>- Vegetarian diet: 0.39</strong><br><strong>- Flexitarian diet: 0.79</strong><br><strong>- Red meat diet: 2.4</strong><br><br>For your restaurant expenditure (category "Restaurants, bars"):<br><strong>- Vegetarian diet: 0.13</strong><br><strong>- Flexitarian diet: 0.26</strong><br><br>To refine the estimate of the carbon footprint of your transport expenditure, you can calculate the emissions of your air travel and train travel separately by multiplying the amount of the expenditure by one of the following factors depending on the mode of transport used:<br><strong>- For a train journey: 0.0331</strong><br><strong>- For a plane journey: 1.695</strong></p><p>‍</p>
