Using Platform.sh’ 2020 data, Greenly performed a density study to see how efficiently Platform.sh uses CPUs in the cloud compared to a standard deployment (AWS Elastic Cloud 2).

Platform.sh density was on average 12x more dense for their offering with the highest mutualization possible (grid) – -this means 12x less electricity was used to run an equivalent workload. More specifically, the breakdown was:

And 5x more dense for clients that requested low mutualization of resources (dedicated). 

This reduction in resource use, means less electricity is used by the datacenter, and ultimately lower CO2 emissions. On average for the globe, this translated into a 9x lower CO2 emission factor compared to the “bare mental scenario” due to Platform.sh superior density offer for their highly mutualized approach and 6x lower emissions for the less mutualized approach.

Considering the alarming IPCC reports and the clear interest of students in socio-ecological issues and their initiatives in this regard, and considering the importance of training enlightened citizens, responsible stewards who are aware of the social and moral consequences of their actions, it is crucial that emlyon business school adopts a strong environmental strategy through an ambitious climate plan and a commitment that extends throughout all aspects of the school from teaching to research. 

Thus, the school is committed to radically lower its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by following a plan in line with the Paris Accords.  More specifically, this translates to the goal of achieving Net Zero (a balance between emissions created and captured by carbon skins on a global scale) by 2050.

emlyon has already carried out an inventory of our GHG emissions. The school’s carbon footprint was 8830t CO2 in 2021. This has allowed us to better structure our environmental policy and to develop our action plan to reduce our emissions over the long term.

emlyon, in collaboration with Greenly, has implemented a specific action plan: 

Energy action plan: stop using gas for heating systems (Lyon campus), reduce heating temperatures, maintenance of cooling systems.

Digital action plan: upgrade IT equipment with refurbished devices and increase their lifespan, practice a responsible digital approach, optimize data storage by deleting old data.  

Commuting action plan: shift to reduce car and plane travel.

Purchasing action plan: rate suppliers on their commitments, take CSR criteria into account on all purchases, raise awareness of responsible purchasing among buyers.

When PayFit contacted Greenly, its objective was to easily carry out an initial GHG assessment. Regarding the environment, more specifically, we are all aware that it is not a question of choice or beliefs, but that it is really the biggest challenge of our time, and that obviously the first step is to understand our own environmental impact, to better assess and improve it.</p><p><strong>Why Greenly?</strong></p><p>When we decided to do our carbon assessment, we realized that there are two schools of thought today. On the one hand, there is the classic school of using a consultancy firm, and on the other hand, there is a start-up solution like Greenly. In this overview of these two solutions, we have realized that both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of consultancies is that they are focused on support, offering a very detailed analysis, but they are also more expensive and time consuming<br>. &nbsp;A start-up, however, will stand out for its speed. What interested us for this first assessment was to have a fairly quick overview of our impact, so that we could start acting quickly.</p><p>‍</p><h2>Update on PayFit's carbon footprint 📊</h2><p>Our first assessment gave us a quick overview of our emissions, which allowed us to distinguish PayFit's main emission items. We realised the importance of Scope 3, although it is not currently mandatory to assess it. However, at PayFit, it is the most important emission item. Since we offer SaaS, we also noticed that the second most important emissions item was Digital. We were surprised by the low percentage of emissions that travel occupied, even if this result is linked to the context of the year 2020, which has strongly contributed to reducing the use of transport. We will therefore pay attention to this in the years to come. Finally, our third emissions item concerned fixed assets. To achieve our objective, we intend to involve managers for each major emission item. I am quite convinced that it is not just me, as the CSR manager, who can implement reduction actions on my own. You have to involve all the stakeholders in the company. The objective is to reconcile the response to climate and environmental issues with the growth of our company. To do this, we must already have a better understanding of our uses, such as in terms of actions for the use of our servers and our online advertising, but also in terms of thinking about how to have a more responsible purchasing policy</p><div class="container_img"><img src="" loading="lazy" /></div><h2></h2>

If it is deactivated, activate it from your Client Area on the mabanque.bnpparibas website.</p><h2>Your questions about the My Carbon Footprint tool: Carbon Footprint, why is it important to reduce it?</h2><p>Without a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activity, the average global surface temperature would rise by 2°C to 3.5°C by 2100, according to projections by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). This global warming suggests an increase in the number of extreme weather events, in particular droughts, rising oceans and ocean acidification, with many negative consequences for human health and development.In 2016, the countries that signed the Paris Agreement agreed to limit their CO2 emissions to keep warming below 2°C. They committed to reducing the share of fossil fuels in production, and set an emissions target of about 2 tonnes of CO2 per year per capita. In 2018, the average carbon footprint of a French person was 11.2 t CO2eq per year. In addition to structural efforts to change our production patterns and have a positive impact on the environment, the commitment of individuals to decarbonising their consumption and lifestyle is essential to achieving these reduction targets.</p><div class="container_img"><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/6232f79b68d15d3d9b69c096/62399f9df582902e618d1362_61faa8a367ac21aba592d149_guy-bowden-lVDnLUACI18-unsplash-p-1080.jpg" loading="lazy" /></div><h2>How is my carbon footprint estimated?</h2><p>Your carbon footprint is estimated by calculating the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for each of your expenses (bank transactions recorded on your deposit account). The name of the transaction is used to categorise the expense and thus determine the type of shopping basket, product or service associated with it. A coefficient, specific to each purchase category or supplier, is applied to the amount of the expenditure. These coefficients, called "monetary emission factors", are used to convert euros into kg of CO2. Provided by the Greenly Participatory Carbon Benchmark, they correspond to the ratio of the emissions of a product or service to the price. They can also be calculated by taking the ratio of a sector's emissions to its turnover.<br></p><p>The estimation of your carbon footprint is accurate for expenditure on sectors whose products are homogeneous in terms of carbon intensity.
