Matthieu is a 28 year-old graduate engineer from Ecole Polytechnique and Télecom Paris, with a background in data science at Withings. While there, he worked on watch activity detection algorithms, and developed a health study activity so that connected objects could be used to better monitor certain pathologies. He has long been involved in data science projects with his brother, who has the same training. Faced with the urgency of the climate crisis, he decided to put his know-how at the service of the environment.

Renewable energy is energy obtained from natural resources that are infinite or able to regenerate themselves, for example heat from the sun, wind, water, organic matter from plant and animal decay and waste, subterranean heat, and others. Each renewable energy source requires it’s own storage technology, and, like most things in Life, each has its pros and cons.

Some of the more positive aspects of renewable energy include the following:
Renewable energy sources are inexhaustible and they adapt to natural cycles, unlike conventional energy sources such as coal, gas, oil or nuclear power. As such, they are the key to powering truly sustainable development that doesn’t put future generations at risk.

Renewable energy is probably best known for the fact that it does not emit greenhouse gases. This is key for mitigating the impact of human activities on the environment and reducing the effects of climate change.
The environmental impact of renewable energy is 55 times lower than that of conventional energy derived from fossil fuels.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, increasing the use of renewable energy to 36% of total energy sources globally by 2030 would provide employment to over 24 million people, compared to the 9.2 million currently employed in the energy sector. Likewise, the global economy would grow by 1% (the equivalent of 1.3 trillion dollars).

For several years the cost of renewable energy has fallen worldwide thanks to the development of new technologies that constantly improve its efficiency. In addition, there has been growing political support from the international community for its many benefits. 


Let’s have a closer look at two specific types of renewable energy:
The improving technology to capture and store solar energy has made it possible to develop remote areas previously off limits, such as deserts, where there are more hours of sunlight. More sunlight equals more energy. The isolation of such areas makes it difficult and very expensive to run an electricity grid, and in these situations solar energy solves the problem.
Thermal energy plants are cheaper to build, considering the cost of installed megawatts, the simplicity of construction and the mass energy produced.

Renewable energy sounds wonderful, but there are also some disadvantages we need to consider:
Some types of renewable energy still cause negative effects on the environment; not all of them are 100% green. For example, one of the unwanted side effects of using geothermal energy is that the process drags toxic salts and minerals up to the Earth’s surface. Despite this though, pollution is still lower than when processing non-renewable energy.

One of the main lingering challenges with renewable energy systems is the initial investment required to start them up. This involves relatively large amounts of money, which often makes renewables appear unprofitable at first.

Another significant drawback of renewable energy facilities is the space required to start developing them, and the large amount of materials required for their construction. Take for example solar energy, thermal energy and wind energy, all of which require large plants, with expensive technology and which, in some cases, generate high levels of pollution during their production.

Renewable energy plants can also have a negative impact on landscapes. If you want to obtain a lot of energy you need to create solar or wind plants that take up a lot of space. This can have a negative visual impact and can also become a problem for some groups of fauna, such as migratory birds, in the case of wind farms, and present a physical barrier for the movement of terrestrial species, especially medium and large mammals.

One of the main drawbacks of using wind energy, for example, is locating the wind farms. The location of these large devices is important, since they require an area with a lot of wind unimpeded by any natural or artificial barriers.
Hydraulic energy, especially that produced through the containment of water in rivers, can generate floods, changes in habitat, displacement of species and erosion.

As extreme weather events roiled communities around the world this summer, businesses and governments are feeling more pressure than ever to respond to climate change.

Tracking emissions has historically been difficult, because the methods for tracking a company’s carbon footprint are all over the place. In the U.S., corporate sustainability reporting remains unstandardized and largely voluntary. But the landscape looks better in Europe, as a recently adopted proposal is set to expand the number of companies that must produce sustainability reports. That measure will also require more detailed and standardized disclosures and impose mandatory audits.

That’s where companies like Plan A and Planetly come in. These Berlin-based startups make software that helps companies monitor, report and reduce their carbon emissions, and the market for their services is booming. Meanwhile, apps like Klima, which help individuals offset their own personal emissions, are also growing rapidly.
