What is retail? Why is it so important for the economy?
Retailing is the final step in distribution of merchandise, where retailers sell merchandise directly to the end consumer in small quantities.

Retail is one of the most vital sectors of the economy. It supports 1 in 4 U.S. jobs and contributes 7.7% to the U.S. GDP

How Does The Business Model Work?
The business model of retailing involves buying merchandise in large quantities from wholesalers (or manufacturers) at low price and selling it in small quantities to the general public at higher price. The difference in price is called gross profit.

In order to deliver such a service, retailers perform a lot of activities through different functions in the business

These include:

Product Sourcing
Marketing & Branding
Store Operations
Merchandising

They also rent different stores, offices and warehouse locations. 

Retailers spend part of the gross profit they earned from selling the merchandise at the stores on running such functions and paying those rents, and at the end they generate a smaller pre-tax profit

Going underground: how commuting is bad for your health | FT

There’s been a lot of false information out there about air pollution. The fact is the air in London breaches legal limits, meaning it’s harmful to people’s health in ways which can cause cancer and stop children’s lungs growing. That’s why I have introduced the Ultra Low Emission Zone. 

The air on the London Underground contains dust particles—which TfL is also addressing—but these are nowhere near as harmful to human health.

Tube Dust Isn’t the Same As Air Pollution

A recent study revealed dangerously high levels of pollution in the London Underground’s air. In places the level is 10 times more than World Health Organisation guidelines, putting workers and commuters at risk of lung and heart diseases. Here, Charles Pitt, Head of Policy and Influencing for the British Safety Council, explains the severity of the issue and outlines what measures need to be taken to address it.

Many people don't agree with the emissions test because it ends up costing them some extra money, but I would rather pay a few hundred extra dollars than to deal with a ruined environment because we wanted to save a few bucks.
