A future climate like that of Venus?

We’re already witnessing firsthand the impacts of these threats, however, In the long term, the situation could be even more dire. Hawking contemplates the sobering possibility of the Earth’s climate deteriorating into something akin to that of Venus. 

Venus, our neighbouring planet, is notorious for its scorching temperatures, a thick atmosphere laden with carbon dioxide, and sulphuric acid rain clouds. It's a stark example of the runaway greenhouse effect, where the planet's capability to absorb heat outstripped its ability to radiate it back into space, leading to a continuous increase in temperatures.

Hawking draws a parallel between the atmospheric conditions of Venus and the trajectory Earth might be on due to the continuous and excessive release of greenhouse gases. Tapping into these extraterrestrial reserves could provide answers to pressing resource shortages, presenting a dual benefit of not only expanding our living spaces but also supplementing Earth's depleting assets.

Of course, such a colossal undertaking requires significant investment. While some might argue that resources would be better spent on preserving and rehabilitating our home planet, Hawking does not see these objectives as mutually exclusive. He contends that while we should undoubtedly channel technology and funding toward solving Earth's pressing climate crisis, it's equally imperative to explore space. This dual approach doesn't merely offer a backup plan but potentially enriches our understanding of life and our responsibilities as Earth's stewards.

By broadening humanity's experiences through space travel and potentially introducing more individuals to the wonders beyond our atmosphere, Hawking believes we can foster a renewed appreciation and sense of ownership for our home planet.
