What are the main challenges Stephen Hawking believes humanity will face?

In the chapter “Will We Survive on Earth?” from "Brief Answers to the Big Questions," Stephen Hawking delves into the most pressing challenges humanity is set to face in the upcoming decades and beyond. While natural disasters like super-volcano eruptions and asteroid impacts might seem like distant possibilities, history reminds us of their devastating potential; they've previously brought life on Earth to the brink of extinction. Given their inevitability over vast timescales, the threat they pose cannot be understated.

Yet, it's not just these rare cataclysmic events that should concern us. Hawking also draws attention to human-made threats, fuelled by the rapid advancement in technology. From the destructive potential of nuclear or biological warfare to the unpredictable ramifications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, Hawking cautions against complacency.

However, one specific threat is already transitioning from prediction to reality: climate change and environmental degradation.

In case you need a reminder as to why this presents such a challenge to the survival of mankind, we’ve provided a little refresher:

  • Climate change - At the forefront of environmental concerns is climate change, primarily driven by the excessive release of greenhouse gases from activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes. The repercussions are multi-faceted, leading to melting ice caps, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and massive disruptions in biodiversity. These shifts can displace populations, threaten global food sources, and instigate socioeconomic upheavals.
  • Biodiversity loss - The accelerated extinction rate of species is a cause for alarm. Driven by habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and the impacts of climate change, the loss of biodiversity threatens the balance of ecosystems and deprives humanity of crucial resources, ranging from food to medicinal discoveries.
  • Pollution - Beyond just greenhouse gases, the contamination of our environment with pollutants like heavy metals, plastics, and harmful chemicals is of grave concern. The health implications of pollution are dire, resulting in a host of diseases and significantly affecting global health. Additionally, the persistence of plastics in our oceans poses severe threats to marine life and introduces contaminants into the food chain.
  • Resource depletion - Our rapidly expanding global population puts a strain on the planet's resources. Unsustainable practices, such as overfishing, over-extraction of minerals, and freshwater misuse, not only endanger current supplies but also threaten the availability for future generations, posing risks to global security and economic well-being.

A future climate like that of Venus?

We’re already witnessing firsthand the impacts of these threats, however, In the long term, the situation could be even more dire. Hawking contemplates the sobering possibility of the Earth’s climate deteriorating into something akin to that of Venus.

Venus, our neighbouring planet, is notorious for its scorching temperatures, a thick atmosphere laden with carbon dioxide, and sulphuric acid rain clouds. It's a stark example of the runaway greenhouse effect, where the planet's capability to absorb heat outstripped its ability to radiate it back into space, leading to a continuous increase in temperatures.

Hawking draws a parallel between the atmospheric conditions of Venus and the trajectory Earth might be on due to the continuous and excessive release of greenhouse gases. The rampant burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and other human activities release vast amounts of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. If left unchecked, these emissions could amplify the greenhouse effect on Earth to a tipping point where it becomes irreversible. The result would be a dramatic increase in global temperatures, making Earth's environment hostile to life as we know it.

This cautionary reference to Venus serves as a reminder of the potential magnitude of the climate crisis. Hawking underscores the urgency of proactive measures to combat climate change and prevent Earth from undergoing a Venus-like transformation.

Rising to meet the challenges: Stephen Hawking's vision

In the face of existential threats to humanity, Stephen Hawking's "Brief Answers to the Big Questions" underscores the crucial role scientists play in both understanding and navigating these challenges. Scientists are at the forefront of deciphering the ways in which human activities and technological advancements are exacerbating climate change. Hawking argues that with this deep understanding comes an inherent responsibility to educate and communicate with the broader public about the impending dangers and potential solutions.

In the chapter "How do we shape the future?", Hawking passionately contends that the rapidly evolving technological and scientific landscape necessitates that the younger generation possess at least a foundational understanding of science. This foundation not only equips them to thrive in a technologically-driven world but also to potentially become the next Einstein or Curie, whose groundbreaking insights might hold the keys to preserving humanity's future - whether this is developing new renewable energy sources, finding an effective way to remove the excess carbon in our atmosphere, or creating the technology to allow us to explore distant solar systems.

However, in an era where populism is on the rise, science faces an unprecedented challenge. A growing number of individuals and political leaders, particularly in the West, are diminishing the importance of science, often pushing misinformation instead.

This trend towards insularity and nationalism is perilous. In contrast, Hawking champions global interconnectivity, asserting that collaborative, interconnected efforts are indispensable for fostering solutions to the monumental challenges we face.

Looking beyond our planet: Hawking's vision of space exploration

Stephen Hawking's contemplation of humanity's future doesn't stop at our planetary borders. Recognising the limitations of our home planet, with its finite resources and growing population, he believed that for the survival and prosperity of humankind, we must look beyond the confines of Earth and explore the cosmos.

The rationale behind this bold vision is multifaceted. Our planet's diminishing resources juxtaposed against an ever-growing population necessitates strategic thinking for our long-term survival - a strategy extending hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In this expansive view of the future, Hawking advocates for the exploration and potential colonisation of other habitable planets.

The exploration of space offers more than just potential new homes for humanity. Such exploration might alleviate the mounting pressures on Earth from dwindling resources. Beyond habitable environments, other planets - even those considered to be inhospitable for life - could provide metals and valuable resources currently finite on our planet. Tapping into these extraterrestrial reserves could provide answers to pressing resource shortages, presenting a dual benefit of not only expanding our living spaces but also supplementing Earth's depleting assets.

Of course, such a colossal undertaking requires significant investment. While some might argue that resources would be better spent on preserving and rehabilitating our home planet, Hawking does not see these objectives as mutually exclusive. He contends that while we should undoubtedly channel technology and funding toward solving Earth's pressing climate crisis, it's equally imperative to explore space. This dual approach doesn't merely offer a backup plan but potentially enriches our understanding of life and our responsibilities as Earth's stewards.

By broadening humanity's experiences through space travel and potentially introducing more individuals to the wonders beyond our atmosphere, Hawking believes we can foster a renewed appreciation and sense of ownership for our home planet. This expansion into the cosmos is not just about survival but about evolving our perspective on life and our place in the universe.

In his forward-thinking narrative, Hawking acknowledges Earth's growing constraints and sees the universe as humanity's next frontier. While Earth remains our home, the prospect of colonising other planets serves as a long-term solution, ensuring the continuation and evolution of human civilisation in the vast expanse of space.
