What are carbon emissions?

The idea of a personal carbon footprint was popularized by a large advertising campaign of the fossil fuel company BP in 2005. This piece of propaganda was designed to shift the responsibility of carbon emissions from the company to the public.

The International Transport Forum (ITF) releases a biennial report on how we can reduce the carbon emissions from transport - planes, trains, automobiles, and more. This video is a summary of the recent 2023 ITF report, breaking their "high ambition" framework down into fifteen steps. Are these steps the optimal pathway to decarbonising transport? Quite possibly not. Is there lots of complexity in the report that I don't have the time to discuss in the video? Definitely. Are sustainable aviation fuels realistic? Doubtful.

But this video is an overview of one - at least quasi- - realistic pathway to slashing transport emissions. It contains several points that I am doubtful of. But I hope this is a useful starting point, based on a respected think tank and established literature. If you would like to learn more, please check out the documents below:

Can we cut emissions from construction by half...by tomorrow? | Sigbjørn Faanes | TEDxSkift

Agriculture is one of the sectors most affected by climate change. However, it also contributes to the release of gases like ammonia and greenhouse gases (GHGs), affecting the quality of air and biodiversity.

These gases are mostly generated from livestock and from organic and mineral nitrogen fertilisers. The EU has put legislation in place to control air pollution, such as the National Emissions Ceilings (NEC) directive setting reduction targets for all countries.

Mitigation and adaptation are therefore key in finding long-lasting solutions to reduce emissions in the agricultural sector. Choosing the right solutions and applying them in a smart way is also essential in making the European farming sector more sustainable.

EURACTIV organised this workshop to discuss practical ways to reduce emissions in the agricultural sector to mitigate climate change. Questions included:

Are the current measures at the EU level enough? Should NEC be revised?
How can precision farming help reduce emissions?
What concrete measures can be implemented by farmers?

The Montreal Protocol is one of the most successful universally ratified environmental treaties and example of successful multilateralism. Without the Montreal Protocol, it is estimated that the global ozone layer would have collapsed by the mid-21st century, with devastating environmental implications. Assuming compliance with the Protocol, scientists estimate that the ozone hole is now expected to gradually close, with ozone returning to 1980 values by the 2060s.

But there is more to be done. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol aims to phase-out so called HFC gasses. Compliance with the Amendment will avoid up to 0.4°C of global warming over this century. The full adoption may even double its positive impact on climate.
