After the company was bought by Nokia, he joined the startup Embleema by working through Techstars, one of the best startup incubators in the United States, where he developed a taste for entrepreneurship. His return to France was an opportunity to put all his experience at the service of the environment, during a crucial moment in the climate crisis.

Arnaud, 26 years old, trained as a designer and in digital communication at INSEEC before joining the Master Entrepreunariat at ESSEC-CentraleSupélec. Passionate about social media since his teenage years, he has created some of the biggest Twitter communities in France before joining the digital communication team of the Prime Minister’s office in Matignon. It was at the Secretaries of State for Digital, Mounir Mahjoubi and Cédric O, where Arnaud directly managed the team, that he developed a strong conviction for the need to use technology to bring awareness to the greatest causes of our time.

Greenly raises $23M to bring carbon management to all companies and fast-track the transition to a net-zero-carbon economy

Greenly has closed a $23 million Series A funding round co-led by Energy Impact Partners (EIP) and Xange.

Greenly raises $23M to fast-track the transition to a net-zero-carbon economy

 In the race to Net Zero, the increase in regulations and the rise of customer demand has led to a dramatic rise in the number of companies committing to low carbon strategies. To massify carbon management, Greenly is disrupting the consultancy-led process of collecting and analyzing data manually, by deploying simple and intuitive software. Integrating with most corporate data sources, Greenly offers to move from snapshot analytics to continuous carbon monitoring. With more than 400 corporate customers in Europe, Greenly has recently opened offices in the US, and plans to triple its workforce to make carbon management as pervasive as financial management.

Creating platform effects in carbon management

Greenly, a carbon accounting & management platform for SMEs, has closed a Series A fundraising of $23 million. This new round is led by Energy Impact Partners (EIP), a US based investment platform focused on the energy-transition, and XAnge, an early-stage investment tech fund based in Paris (France), and Munich (Germany) with strong impact exposure. Also participating are new investors like Jean-Baptiste Rudelle, founder of Criteo, and the Galion Project. 

Greenly offers SMEs a software as a service  (SaaS) that makes carbon accounting and carbon management easy and intuitive, reducing the barriers to collect and analyze emissions data by integrating with over 100 data sources, including accounting, travel software, cloud consumption data, electricity vendors etc. As such, the company is disrupting a market typically dominated by large consultancies performing ad hoc assignments for enterprises. With already more than 400 corporate customers, Greenly aims to massively increase the carbon management of SMEs, by allowing them to monitor their operations and supply chain in real time, providing less carbon-intensive alternatives, and by offsetting the rest with high-quality carbon-offsetting projects. The raise will allow the company to continue its global roll-out with focus on the US and Europe. In mid-March, Greenly opened new offices in New York, a hub for tech innovation, to kick-start its operations the United States.

Democratizing carbon footprinting among SMEs thanks to AI 

Today, only about 20% of global carbon emissions are tracked and managed. To effectively tackle climate change, we must disrupt a market still dominated by low tech consultancies addressing enterprises with one-shot assignments worth between $20,000 and $100,000. Competitors like Watershed or Persefoni are trying to digitize this process and it’s probably a good idea. But this still leaves out small businesses which actually make up the larger share of emissions. At Greenly, we think this market must be radically disrupted by offering simple to use, affordable software for any business type, making carbon accounting & management as pervasive as financial management. This is the only way to put businesses on a path to Net Zero  and limit global warming, explains Alexis Normand, CEO and co-founder of Greenly.

Integration Greenly with more than 100 business applications makes it possible to automatically quantify a majority of emissions-generating activities, to minimize manual data entries and to fast-track measurement. Typically, accounting data, energy or data centers consumption (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, etc.), as well as eCommerce activity (Shopify, etc.), can be imported directly in the platform. These integrations make it possible to monitor emission generating activities in real time. Thanks to an extensive library of more than one hundred thousand emission factors, Greenly converts these activities into emission metrics and generates a carbon disclosure report compliant with international standards (Greenhouse Gas Protocol).

Greenly also offers e-learning and engagement modules to mobilize company employees, and allows them to take ownership of the topic in full autonomy.

For large companies, it’s also a way to associate their supplier networks with their decarbonization efforts, by benefiting from a more economical solution to decarbonize their supply chain. With its technology, Greenly automates the analysis of data collection by integrating in real time with the accounting or billing data of more than 100 software solutions. 

To support its development in Europe and the USA, Greenly will expand its technical teams, and recruit carbon footprint experts and sales representatives. Therefore, the startup will open 100 positions across Paris and the United States.

Greenly, the startup specialized in carbon assessment is opening new offices in Miami to help SMBs measure, report and reduce the carbon footprint of their operation and supply chain.  

Greenly offers a unique software that makes every step of carbon management simpler : from tracking emissions to devising actions plans, from employee training to offsetting. Today, Greenly is helping more than 350 companies on their Net Zero trajectory, deploying deep sector specific expertise with tech companies who are looking to reduce emissions linked to cloud computing. 

With its technology, Greenly automates data collection, integrating in real time with accounting or billing data and with more than 100 software applications, such as those of energy providers or data centers (Amazon, Google Cloud…), or even e-commerce software (Shopify…).  

When we launched Greenly in 2019, we first wanted to help small and medium size businesses take a stance on climate change. We quickly realized this meant finding ways to reconcile their business needs with a necessary path towards Net Zero. What is essentially missing for SMBs is a “Quickbooks” for carbon accounting, that is to say a solution that makes carbon management simple, intuitive and cost-effective. This meant disrupting the traditional carbon accounting space, replacing costly consultants with software. It’s really the only way to scale carbon accounting in America. Today, we provide SMBs with dashboards to manage their carbon on top of everything else. We essentially save them time by integrating with over 100 B2B softwares, from accounting to travel, cloud computing or enterprise marketplaces such as Sphopify. Opening New Positions in Miami, a City Battered by Climate Change

Florida has warmed dramatically in the last century. The sea is rising about one inch every decade, and heavy rainstorms are becoming more severe. In January 2020, Mayor Francis Suarez announced a carbon neutrality goal of reaching net zero City-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and nominated a Chief Heat Officer to address rising temperatures and protect the most vulnerable. Since then, the City has released a greenhouse gas inventory and has started working on a greenhouse gas reduction strategy to determine the roadmap to carbon neutrality. Companies based in Miami are conscious of the ecological impact of reducing their emissions and Greenly can help them in this transition. 

While regulatory pressures may increase to address the growing crisis, Greenly was launched with a mission to make it easier for small businesses to set climate related objectives. With more and more businesses seeking to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, many are looking for the best certifications for carbon management – which could very well be the PAS 2080.

‍What is the PAS 2080, and why is it a respected certification for  companies seeking to establish and improve their carbon management?

The PAS 2080 is an international standard to manage carbon usage throughout various infrastructures. The PAS 2080 works to achieve this by monitoring the entire value chain and seeks to reduce carbon emissions depending on the data revealed by the value chain itself. The  PAS 2080 is originally derived from a document in the U.K.’s  Construction Playbook – which is being referred to more often to specify carbon management in buildings today. The carbon management standard was initially developed by the BSI, or the British Standards Institution 

The PAS 2080 has recently undergone several updates, which is set to be published later this year. After the updated  version of the PAS 2080 has been released, users of the current PAS 2080 will be encouraged to purchase the upgraded edition to ensure that  their certification remains as efficacious as possible. 

In this episode, I look at the newly, published revision to PAS 2080, now, PAS 2080:2023.

This episode covers this guidance document, which has been revised from its earlier 2016 version to set out how the construction sector can transition to net zero by 2050 by managing and reducing whole life carbon in buildings and infrastructure.

By using PAS 2080:2023, it has the capability to empower behavioural change, by uniting all organizations through a common framework that will help companies maximize their whole life approach to carbon reduction from the earliest origins of the projects through its end of life.

Some of the improvements made to the PAS 2080 include expansion of the standard to pertain to more existing buildings, clearly define the roles for all part of the value chain in order to control and reduce emissions more effectively, pontificate the importance of a reduced  carbon footprint, further work to decarbonize various systems, implement new tactics such as climate resilience, and promote both leadership and  collaboration throughout the value chain.

Similar to the ISO series, there is a PAS series where it can  be easy to confuse one accreditation with the other – such as the  difference between the PAS 2060 and the PAS 2080. 

The  difference between the PAS 2060 and the PAS 2080, is that the PAS 2060  is a standard that aims to encourage businesses to demonstrate their efforts towards carbon neutrality and establish greater transparency  between their customers and potential business partners to avoid allegations like greenwashing. The PAS 2060 can assist companies to create a personalized plan on how to measure, reduce, and offset their carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. 

On the other hand, the PAS 2080, while it also strives to improve transparency – is designed to help businesses manage  their carbon emissions specifically throughout their infrastructure. This is done by setting strict limits on emissions to build more carbon efficient buildings for businesses. 

Both the PAS 2060 and the PAS 2080 are standards that were published by the British Standards Institution – but the PAS 2060 is older and more general than the PAS 2080.
