The Montreal Protocol is one of the most successful universally ratified environmental treaties and example of successful multilateralism. Without the Montreal Protocol, it is estimated that the global ozone layer would have collapsed by the mid-21st century, with devastating environmental implications. Assuming compliance with the Protocol, scientists estimate that the ozone hole is now expected to gradually close, with ozone returning to 1980 values by the 2060s.

But there is more to be done. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol aims to phase-out so called HFC gasses. Compliance with the Amendment will avoid up to 0.4°C of global warming over this century. The full adoption may even double its positive impact on climate.

UN scientists have unveiled a plan that they believe can limit the root causes of dangerous climate change.

A key UN body said in a report that there must be "rapid, deep and immediate" cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.

Global emissions of CO2 would need to peak within three years to stave off the worst impacts.

Even then, the world would also need technology to suck CO2 from the skies by mid-century.

Why is the Colorado River suffering from a water crisis? Is global warming impacting the Colorado river and other bodies of water in unexpected ways?

A water crisis is unfolding in the nation's Southwest, as the Colorado River begins to dry up, the result of overconsumption, climate change and drought. Theodore Cooke, general manager of the Central Arizona Project, the state's largest renewable water supply, spoke to CBS News about what this could mean for the region moving forward.
