Amidst rising scrutiny of carbon offsetting and carbon management practices, Greenly, the leader in providing low-carbon solutions for enterprises, unveils its proprietary Net Zero Contributor Certification. With a focus on transparency and methodological consistency, the label serves as an important instrument against greenwashing and meets growing customer demand for truly sustainable brands and products. 

A valuable tool in the fight against greenwashing

Greenly supports committed companies that aim to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable business model and to demonstrate this approach to the public. Unlike countries such as France, where greenwashing is punishable by two years in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 euros, no specific anti-greenwashing legislation currently exists in the UK. However, businesses falsely advertising products as ‘green’ or sustainable may be caught by existing laws including misrepresentation or consumer protection laws which prevent false advertising. Similarly, the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) can also penalize businesses for misleading adverts and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a Green Claims Code sets out action items to check that a company’s environmental claims are truly green. This is a highly complex subject, on which most organizations need support and guidance if they are to meet the ambitious objectives defined at an institutional level.

In this context, Greenly is launching its Net Zero Contributor Certified label, which testifies to the transparency and traceability of the company's environmental transition. More specifically, it certifies that its carbon dioxide emissions have been duly measured and then reduced to the minimum possible. In addition, the label created by Greenly certifies that these remaining CO2 emissions have been compensated for by financing approved offset projects. In this way, Greenly encourages companies to properly decarbonise their activity. This annual certification will support companies in their climate strategy and attest to the robustness of the decarbonization strategy of any organization aiming to develop a trajectory in line with the requirements of the Paris Agreement.

A certification which uses measurable data to ensure reliability

To arrive at a reliable assessment of a company’s environmental transition, as well as the reduction of its carbon footprint to the maximum possible, Greenly has embraced a transparent, data-driven approach.

For the time being, Greenly has limited the eligibility for its certification to companies that calculate their carbon footprint with the help of Greenly's teams, providing a consistent approach to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the carbon accounting data presented. Companies wishing to obtain this label can work with Greenly to carry out a carbon footprint assessment.

Keeping in mind the interdependent nature of the ecological cycle, Greenly insists that the participating companies’ employees and suppliers take part in the process. Indirect emissions from suppliers (scope 3 emissions) can represent 90% of a company's carbon footprint, hence the urgency of decarbonising their value chain. Greenly raises $23M to fast-track the transition to a net-zero-carbon economy

 In the race to Net Zero, the increase in regulations and the rise of customer demand has led to a dramatic rise in the number of companies committing to low carbon strategies. To massify carbon management, Greenly is disrupting the consultancy-led process of collecting and analyzing data manually, by deploying simple and intuitive software. Integrating with most corporate data sources, Greenly offers to move from snapshot analytics to continuous carbon monitoring. With more than 400 corporate customers in Europe, Greenly has recently opened offices in the US, and plans to triple its workforce to make carbon management as pervasive as financial management.

Creating platform effects in carbon management

Greenly, a carbon accounting & management platform for SMEs, has closed a Series A fundraising of $23 million. This new round is led by Energy Impact Partners (EIP), a US based investment platform focused on the energy-transition, and XAnge, an early-stage investment tech fund based in Paris (France), and Munich (Germany) with strong impact exposure. Also participating are new investors like Jean-Baptiste Rudelle, founder of Criteo, and the Galion Project. 

Greenly offers SMEs a software as a service  (SaaS) that makes carbon accounting and carbon management easy and intuitive, reducing the barriers to collect and analyze emissions data by integrating with over 100 data sources, including accounting, travel software, cloud consumption data, electricity vendors etc. As such, the company is disrupting a market typically dominated by large consultancies performing ad hoc assignments for enterprises. With already more than 400 corporate customers, Greenly aims to massively increase the carbon management of SMEs, by allowing them to monitor their operations and supply chain in real time, providing less carbon-intensive alternatives, and by offsetting the rest with high-quality carbon-offsetting projects. The raise will allow the company to continue its global roll-out with focus on the US and Europe. Democratizing carbon footprinting among SMEs thanks to AI 

Today, only about 20% of global carbon emissions are tracked and managed. To effectively tackle climate change, we must disrupt a market still dominated by low tech consultancies addressing enterprises with one-shot assignments worth between $20,000 and $100,000. Competitors like Watershed or Persefoni are trying to digitize this process and it’s probably a good idea. But this still leaves out small businesses which actually make up the larger share of emissions. At Greenly, we think this market must be radically disrupted by offering simple to use, affordable software for any business type, making carbon accounting & management as pervasive as financial management. Laetitia Carle, former Chief of Staff at Greenly, the leader in digitized carbon footprint assessment and expertise in evaluating corporate climate performance, has just been appointed as COO and Managing Director of France of the climate tech company.

Laetitia joined Greenly in the summer of 2022 as Chief of Staff, following a stint as Founder and CEO in Residence at Entrepreneur First. As the CEO's right hand, she took on cross-functional roles, both operational and strategic, to structure Greenly's hypergrowth. Over the course of just one year, Greenly's activity quintupled, with the team of 180 people serving 1,500 clients in 10 countries. Laetitia played a key role in the company's transition from startup to scale-up: implementing cross-functional processes to execute an ambitious business plan, centrally managing team goals, pricing strategies, and directly supervising teams in Partnerships, Sustainable Finance, and Responsible Procurement for enterprise accounts.

The appointment as COO and France Managing Director provides Laetitia with an opportunity to further elevate Greenly's ambition both in France and internationally. I distinctly remember the first time I noticed cryptocurrency was making its way into society... Wandering around an unusually empty Union Square Market in Manhattan during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, a sign for vegan baked goods caught my eye. I took note of a small bakery-cart with a large, double-chocolate chip muffin calling my name.

Many countries such as the United States, especially after the sanitary crisis – are switching to contactless or cashless payment methods. This bakery stand was no exception to this newfound rule, and I struggled to pay with Venmo – as credit cards weren’t even accepted. 

So, my eyes instinctively drifted to the large payment method sign with newfound curiosity. It read in large print: “We Take Bitcoin” and “Cryptocurrency Accepted.”

That’s when I realized cryptocurrency was becoming more common than I previously had thought. However, I still couldn’t help but wonder – what is the difference between cryptocurrency and other forms of payment: like cash, credit cards, or Venmo?

First of all, what are cryptocurrencies? Why have they taken the market by storm, and have become a common method of contactless payment in our society?

Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that are not impacted by the economy the same way a typical currency is. Cryptocurrencies are a separate entity from currencies that can take a physical form as paper money, and they do not stimulate the economy as locale is irrelevant.

For example the U.S. dollar or the Euro s subject to change its value on a daily basis, whereas the value of a cryptocurrency is made by the users with a decentralized system. This process in cryptocurrency is called mining.

Mining is an automated system which uses artificial intelligence, such as a computer, to create an algorithm to determine the current value of a cryptocurrency. 

Cryptocurrencies work as a peer-to-peer system where no centralized third party is necessary to complete the transaction.

Think of when you use Venmo to make a payment to your friend. Venmo still has to go through your U.S. bank account in order to verify the transaction; the payment isn’t being made through a single party. This isn’t necessary with crypto currencies, as no third party is  needed to complete a transaction – making crypto currency an easier and more instantaneous method of payment.

Instead of going through a bank, transactions are recorded on a digital leger and kept on an encrypted online database – which allows for secure, cashless payments. The public leger which cryptocurrencies document transactions is called Blockchain. 

Instead of keeping a physical copy of all your transactions, cryptocurrencies generate this automatically. Previous cryptocurrency transactions will be logged not only for the user, but also onto the online database – keeping a continuous, synchronized record of transactions. 

This isn’t like waiting for a bill to come through on your credit card or waiting for your bank account to be debited – all transactions with cryptocurrencies are documented the moment they happen, which ultimately allows for greater financial awareness. 

Why should you use or invest in cryptocurrencies?

The biggest benefits to using cryptocurrency is to partake in its mission to correct the corrupt use of traditional currencies. In other words, cryptocurrency puts the potential and capability of the currency in the user’s hands, whereas the fifty dollar bill I hold in my hands today – may not be worth the same amount tomorrow.

But does that sustainable value override the impact crypto currencies have on the environment?

What are the pros and cons of using Cryptocurrencies?

There are several pros to using cryptocurrencies. For starters, revolutionary technology is one of the biggest advantages of using cryptocurrency. By eradicating the use of a third party, crypto currency allows for a more secure payment system and safer future investment  – which appeals to individuals and businesses alike.

As the value of cryptocurrencies aren’t governed by a centralized system, these digital currencies are more resistant to a dramatic change in value. Therefore, investing in cryptocurrencies is a more surefire investment, for instance – in comparison to purchasing a home in the United States that can and willerratically decrease or increase in value. Also, imagine traveling to Europe from the U.S., where you are often catching the currency exchange rate at a bad time – and you’re actually losing money you could spend during your trip. This isn’t a cause for concern with crypto currencies.

Another appeal to the use of cryptocurrencies is the security. The likelihood of getting “robbed” is less when you use digital currency, as they are highly encrypted – hence the name, “crypto” currencies.  

Some common examples of cryptocurrencies, besides the original Bitcon, include Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple. All of these crypto currencies use the same secure encryption and blockchain technology to govern the currency’s value.

However, cryptocurrency isn’t foolproof. The potential cons of using cryptocurrencies include making a poor investment due to a lack of research, and disregarding the time necessary to properly educate oneself to understand all the security protocols necessary when using cryptocurrency. 

Most importantly, crypto currency has proven to not be as environmentally friendly  as one might think.

Cryptocurrency isn’t as difficult as navigating the stock market alone, but it also isn’t as simple or user friendly as apps like Venmo or CashApp.

Are Cryptocurrencies and Carbon Offsetting compatible?

So, how do cryptocurrency and carbon offsetting impact one another? But first, what is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a preventative action in attempts to justify a high level of carbon already emitted into the environment by contributing to another project or organization determined to lower carbon emissions and promote a positive impact on the environment.

Still don’t understand carbon offsetting? 

Think of it this way: imagine you’re in a cafe, and you order an iced coffee that comes with a plastic straw. You feel guilty that you’ve used a non-reusable utensil, so when you’re at the cash register, and they ask if you’d like to donate to a community project that strives to support the environment – you do.

Would you have donated had the cafe served you with a glass or paper straw? 

Perhaps not, because you wouldn’t have had the incentive to donate to the environmental project or organization in question had you not felt the need to make up for your recent plastic consumption. 

This is the objective in participating in carbon offsetting projects.

For that reason, it is more important than ever to reduce and avoid your own CO₂ emissions. Nonetheless, some emissions remain unavoidable to date, yet they can be offset. The primary mission of these projects is to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally friendly habits. 

Four common examples of carbon offsetting projects include forestry protection and conservation, sourcing renewable energies, offering community support, and utilizing common waste.

This carbon offset project strives for long-term, environmentally friendly travel through carbon offset projects aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. They provide assistance with calculating carbon emissions from air travel. 

The use of cryptocurrency would ultimately derail the mission of Sustainable Travel International, because in order to achieve sustainable travel – the economies of these tourist destinations need to be stimulated.

If crypto currencies were used as opposed to local currencies, this goal couldnt be achieved.

Just like investing in higher-quality dishware once, it is smarter to contribute to an employee’s method of transportation – as it is a cheaper and more effective way to reduce carbon footprint on a daily basis. 

In conclusion, small actions like these are less time consuming and require less effort to understand and invest in crypto currency. 

Crypto currency can be beneficial to carbon offsetting projects, but only if the research and time is dedicated to make a proper crypto currency investment. It is overall easier to directly reduce carbon emissions than to invest in a carbon offsetting project.

Greenly launches Open Carbon API to promote radical climate transparency in procurement and disclose industry-wide carbon scoring of thousands of companies

Committed to raising awareness on companies’ carbon emissions, Greenly – the leading carbon accounting platform that already helps 1,000+ companies track and reduce their carbon emissions – is now going one step further with the launch of its Open Carbon API, which assigns companies a score to make it easy for anyone to check how transparent it is on its carbon emissions. This new API will help procurement departments and purchasing softwares better assess which suppliers are on track to reach Net Zero goals and determine how selecting the right companies can support their own decarbonization efforts.

Greenly’s carbon scoring metrics have been set up to measure a company’s progress on their decarbonization trajectory, by taking into account factors such as:

Whether companies have conducted carbon assessments

If they have implemented effective carbon reduction strategies

If they trained their employees on environmental issues 

If their supply chain is itself under pressure to decarbonize

If a verifiable strategy of carbon offsetting is in place 

To collect reliable data points for its open carbon scoring, Greenly’s data science team has scanned the ESG reports of over 100,000 companies to precisely collect data typically hidden behind the reports’ window-dressing. This has allowed Greenly to precisely measure whether companies simply track their direct emissions or also include Scope 3, which is typically the majority of emissions linked to a company’s value chain.

Bringing these otherwise inaccessible data points to the forefront, Greenly’s Open Carbon API gives the ability to quickly measure and verify the maturity of a company’s climate disclosures. Data on any given company’s emissions and those of its products is presented in the form of a “data library”. A five color system scores companies with letters ranging from A through F (A being for the most transparent companies and F for those whose carbon decarbonisation strategies are not, as yet, clearly identifiable, for lack of disclosure). 

There is a huge need for increased transparency on where companies really stand with regards to decarbonisation. The sad truth is that only 25% of global emissions are currently being tracked and managed, and that makes it nearly impossible to reduce our emissions by half by 2030, keeping in line with the objective to limit global warming by 1.5°C (2.7°F). The company data library and scoring API will be made accessible on Greenly’s platform on Github and specific procurement softwares such as SpendHQ, formerly known as Per Angusta. A preview is also featured on Greenly’s website for the general public.

Companies wishing to challenge or improve their rating can fill in any missing information on Greenly’s dedicated scoring page. All submissions will be verified and validated by a Greenly climate expert. Action plans based on the rating to improve the company's score will also be available, as well as a purchasing commitment module.

Last but not least, Greenly can deploy its core carbon accounting software to smaller companies that are unable to finance otherwise costly carbon audits from consultancies, thereby further disrupting a market previously reserved to enterprises.

Since Greenly is now serving companies in the thousands, we wanted to help not only our customers on their path to Net Zero, but also all procurement officers to quickly measure if their suppliers share their reduction objectives. The hope is to reinforce the virtuous cycle through which companies are nudged into disclosing their emissions, because they need it to even be in business with their customers.
